L.L.Bean Is Beautiful
If you are close enough and haven’t visited L.L. Bean yet this holiday season then I encourage you to do it! Be sure to be there after dark as the lights in the trees and decorating the entire town of Freeport are beautiful and I think very tastefully done. It surely is an uplifting experience.
No commentsMy Favorite Harbor
Check this out! http://markfleming.pixyblog.com/entry/end-of-an-era This is a photo my son Mark Fleming took at my favorite harbor, Stonington. I like it because it is a true working fishing harbor - you have to look hard to find a sailboat or pleasure boat in this harbor. Not only that, the homes built into the rocky hillsides as they drop down to the harbor make for a very picturesque setting. Another attraction is the Fisherman’s Friend Restaurant - great food!
No commentsWill My Dog Like Acadia?
If you are like my family and you have a dog in the family then this is an important question. The answer is a very big YES!
However, here are some things I would like to reinforce for those of you who always travel with your dog - we do - we don’t do kennels! Acadia and the Downeast region of Maine is not the most dog friendly when it comes to lodging. Some of that, I believe, is due to the fact that B&Bs are very popular here and they simply do not lend themselves to having pets visit. And, because of the high demand for lodging the operators do not feel the need to offer a pet friendly lodging in order to compete.
So, if you do travel with your pet you will find yourself looking at Camping, Motels, and Cottages (kinda in that order) and even then you will find that the number of motels and cottages that welcome dogs is relatively few. This means you should book your lodging early - cottages just plain go early and there aren’t that many motels that will welcome your pet - so demand is high and supply is low.
There is a leash law in effect here in Maine. And, your leash is not supposed to be longer than 6 feet. You are expected to pick up after your dog. That said, Acadia is a great place to enjoy the company of your dog. While I am not here to suggest you ignore our laws I am going to suggest you can meet the intent of the law using verbal commands - I can’t do that with my dog but I know many folks who have excellent control with verbal commands. So, if you use common sense I believe you will find plenty of places on the island (especially on the West side) where you can exercise your dog off the lead.
If you find you need a good kennel while visiting then you are in luck, the Acadia Woods Kennel, Bar Harbor 207-288-9766 acadiawoods@acadia.net is a great service that I highly recommend. You can see more info on my web site www.acadiavacations.com.
3 commentsWinter In Acadia National Park
If you like snowshoeing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling or just relaxing by a fire Acadia is a great place to visit during the winter. If you want snow I do suggest you call ahead to be sure the island has the snow you need. As most of you probably already know the weather in New England is very unpredictable. However, even without snow Acadia has a lot to offer during the peaceful winter months. The ocean is meaner and the ocean waves are higher so the photo ops are fantastic - much more interesting than you will see during the summer months. Why? No clue. I suspect there is some explanation but I don’t have it - I do know from experience however that it is true! Dress warm and hit the Park Loop Road - and if there is a storm in the area watch out.
I also suggest you consider seriously staying at a B&B because they tend to be more cozy which is part of the winter experience. It is also fun to mingle with the locals, particularly when you are in a restaurant. Sure, not ever store and restaurant is open but the ones that are will be fun to visit - it is a good time of year to find out what life is like here in Maine. It is interesting and fun to become part of - come on up and enjoy!

No matter what the age, anyone who enjoys photography will love Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island, in fact all of Down East Maine. Use a point and shoot camera, professional Digital SLR camera, or video camera, it doesn’t matter. And, no matter how experienced you are you will love your results. For me it is the combination of the rocky coast, the mountains that meet the ocean, the clear blue sky, the puffy clouds and the small villages, working harbors, great sunsets, and waves crashing on the rocks all provide a plethora of “Kodak Moments”.
Sunrise along the Park Loop Road is a great place to start - before dawn! Don’t forget, the best time to see wildlife is at dawn and sunset - drive carefully and be extra alert because deer can appear out of nowhere at these times of the day. Sunset at the Bass Harbor Headlight is a great place to get a nice lighthouse shot - keep an eye on the water in this area as harbor seals frequent this location.
Bass Harbor is another great spot at sunrise as is Southwest Harbor. For some great mountain shots I like Flying Mountain, Beehive and Gorham mountain. All three have great open views of the water. If heights are not your thing then the Great Head Trail, Wonderland Trail and the Ship Harbor Trails all take you to beautiful waterfront locations. And, if you want to drive up th the waterfront then be sure to go to the Seawall in Southwest Harbor.

1 commentWhat Is There For My Kids To Do?
This is a common question for families who have young children ( 3 yo up to early teens ). The simple answer is …”that depends”. While I am not ready to make that decision for you I will offer some factors that hopefully will help you make that decision.
Acadia National Park is NOT Disney World nor is it even close to a theme park. No roller coasters, no river boat rides, and don’t expect to find a Ripley’s Believe It or Not. In fact a McDonald’s restaurant is a 35 minute drive from Mount Desert Island. So, does this mean kids cannot enjoy MDI and ANP. In my opinion - they definitely can! In fact, my experience is that kids of all ages can and do enjoy visiting the Park and the Island. It may take a little time but I have found that kids can’t help but have fun in the great out doors - and Acadia makes it even easier.
Here are some ideas …………
* explore tide pools in any of hundreds of locations on the island
* play in the warm waters of several ponds/lakes with small sandy beaches and/or swim floats
* ride on the back of a bike or peddle their own on miles of carriage paths
* paddle a canoe or kayak on a pond or along the coast in coves, inlets and next to rock cliffs
* fly a kite on the beach at the Seawall Picnic area
* visit a seaquarium and get to touch many of the local sea animals and learn about them
* hike trails that range from level and easy to very demanding and everywhere in between
* start their photography career with many can’t fail scenic and beautiful vistas
* go on a whale watch - whales will be seen
* enjoy a Park Ranger led activity - they are always changing
* climb a mountain - easy climbs and very challenging climbs are available for all experience levels
* watch sunrise on the Park Loop Trail or at the top of Cadillac Mountain
* watch sunset at one of the many beautiful locations
* play miniature golf
* camp
* sail on a windjammer
* swim in Echo Lake or one of several other locations
* swim in a swimming pool
This is just a partial list of some of my son’s favorite activities that keep us going back year after year. Acadia National Park is where my son Mark began his photography career (www.markflemingphoto.com and http://markfleming.pixyblog.com/) when he was in the 4th grade.
If you are a family looking for a vacation that involves a lot of quality together time then Acadia is perfect. If you are a young couple looking for an active and romantic honeymoon then Acadia is perfect. If you are a retired couple looking for a quiet and restful time enjoying natures beauty then Acadia is perfect. Bottom line - Acadia has something for everyone!! D
5 commentsSo You Have Never Been To Acadia
If you have never visited Acadia National Park then you are in for a treat! For me, my first visit was one I will never forget. Why? The most obvious is the beauty of the rocky coast combined with miles and miles of easy hiking trails and the many mountains that the average Joe can climb with breathtaking views around every bend. But for me it was also the fact that there is no Main Gate (except for a small toll booth at the beginning of the Park Loop Road - hardly a Main Gate). In fact, if you are like me, you will have a hard time knowing when you are IN the park as you drive around the Island (that being Mount Desert Island). And it is all FREE! Other than a nominal fee for an auto to drive the Park Loop Road there is not charge for parking and there are no fees for enjoying the miles and miles of hiking / biking trails.
I still find amazing just how many people Acadia National Park can absorb on any given day. Because it is so spread out and the activities are so varied you can actually find locations to be alone even during the peak of the summer season. Miles of rocky coast with the constant sights and sounds of waves crashing at your feet, birds flying over head or floating on the water, harbor seals poking their heads out to observe the strange creatures sitting on the rocks, lobster boats with their throaty engines working their lobster pots, tall ships sailing Frenchman Bay, and the list goes on.
Not having seen many other National Parks (yet) I am not in a position to compare but I do know that I love the ease with which I can enjoy the many and varied activities available in Acadia National Park without waiting in lines or feeling like I am crowded into a confined area. I invite you to check out my web site at www.acadiavacations.com where you will find photos and more info on things to enjoy on Mount Desert Island and in Acadia National Park. It you have questions I can be reached at acadiamaine@gmail.com Put Acadia on your Must Do list - you will be very glad you did.
1 commentHow Much Time Do We Need
How long should we plan for our visit to Acadia National Park? This is a very common question and it is not an easy one to answer - it is kinda like the question about what computer should I buy? It depends! How much time you should plan for a visit to Acadia National Park depends on a “bunch of things”. Before I address this issue let me tell you that there are a large number of “regulars” visiting Mount Desert Island (MDI), Acadia and Down East Maine. That should give you a good idea of the kind of recommendations I will be making.
Here are some of the considerations and my recommendations:
Consideration 1: Will this be my first and only visit to MDI/Acadia? If the answer is yes then I recommend you plan as much time as is possible. Especially if you are an outdoor activity lover. I hate to hear people say they have planned only one day!! If you are not likely to visit again then I strongly recommend a minimum of a week and suggest you consider a couple weeks. There are so many relaxing and fun outdoor activities that you will want plenty of time to take advantage of them and still have a relaxing and fun visit.
Consideration 2: Do you plan to take advantage of the fantastic variety of outdoor activities available in the area? If you want to hike, bike, kayak, whale watch, climb a mountain or two or three, photograph sunrise and sunset, relax on the rocks, relax on a mountain top, enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride, rock climb, canoe one or more ponds/lakes, play golf on spectacular courses, shop for local art - the list goes on. If that sounds like you then 2 weeks is not long enough.
Consideration 3: Are you looking for Disney Land North? If so then do not bother to drive to MDI. It is not even close and young children looking for a Mickey Mouse experience will be very unhappy.
Considerstion 4: Are you looking for a romantic visit for two? If yes then 1-2 weeks will work fine - the environment on MDI is very romantic - my opinion. And, if you both enjoy outdoor activity in a quiet and relaxing location the find a cottage and drop out for at least a week but will most likely wish you had 2 weeks.
Consideration 5: You are retired, enjoy fine restaurants, quiet and relaxing places to sit and enjoy the beauty nature has provided and want a peaceful, relaxing not time table place to get away from it all then plan at least a month.
Consideration 6: Are you looking for a very non-Disney type of vacation with a family of grammar school to teenage children who are good at entertaining themselves and would enjoy exploring the rocky coast and tide pools or hiking trails with birds, squirrels and fresh salt air or spruce pine scent then plan a couple weeks. I find most kids actually enjoy the change of pace and there are enough kid special activities to satisfy the need for such thungs - i.e. miniature golf, water slides etc - not very big but still meets the need.
I think this gives you an idea about how much time you may want to plan for your visit - a one day visit is not at all what I recommend and unless your travel distance is great I suspect you will be back again and probably even again. So, a minimum of one week will work but I suggest between 2 weeks and a month and even at that you will likely be back.
8 commentsBack From An Extended Vacation Of My Own
Phew, I am back from a month away on an vacation visiting family in Wisconsin - had a great trip and the weather was fantastic. Finally caught up with all the work that piled up while gone and ready to head into the holiday season.
For those of you who plan to visit Maine during the summer of ‘08 it is time to start making your plans and securing your lodging soon. If you will be looking for a cottage for your family I strongly suggest you book one before March and sooner is better than later. You may find it interesting to know that many of the cottages in the Mount Desert / Down East region are rented by repeat clients each year. Therefore, many of the cottages are booked a year in advance.
B&Bs are not that much different than cottages but typically they do not fill up quite as fast as cottages. Motels and campgrounds are easier to find later into the Spring.
AND, if you want waterfront then you need to be booking early no matter what you are looking for in terms of lodging type.
Let me direct you to www.acadiavacations.com where you can find lodgings selected by me for their quality and their range of price points.
