Search Ends For One Mt. Hood Climber, Other Two Still Missing
December 17, 2006
Rescuers discovered a snowcave today on Mt. Hood, after discovering a rope in the shape of a “y” that lead rescuers there. This particular snowcave, upon further investigation led to the findings of a climber’s backpack, shovel, and other items: but no climber.
A few feet away though, a second cave was found where rescuers discovered the remains of one of three climbers that has been lost on Mt. Hood since Sunday. The climber was pulled from an area where rescue workers had traced a cell phone call on Sunday by Kelly James, one of the lost climbers, to his son.
It is not known at this time whether the body of the climber is indeed that of James, but his son did mention that in James’ lone phone coversation with him, that his dad didn’t sound well and said that it was very cold. That was Sunday.
It has now been seven days of rescue efforts, which included trying to get around a blizzard, 12 inches of snow, 8 inches of rain, and 100 MPH winds. The other two climbers have not been found at this time and the search continues.
