Small teams of searchers returned to the snowy slopes of Mt. Hood today in a last ditch effort to try to gather some clues into what might have happened to Kelly James, Brian Hall, and Jerry “Nikko” Cooke.
Two small teams planned to climb to between 7-8000 feet in an effort to rule out some suspicious looking terrain that they noticed in the air on Wednesday.
On Thursday the search and rescue mission for the three lost climbers on Mt. Hood was called off by Hood River County Sheriff Joe Wampler after talking with family members and learning of a new storm moving into the area Wednesday night and Thursday.
This new storm dropped 3-4 inches of fresh snow over Mt. Hood, but a slight clearing in the weather Thursday afternoon lead to a few searchers scrambling to find further clues in this mysterious accident.
Sheriff Wampler stated that the “rescue” mission was over and efforts have been moved more towards a recovery mission that might not see an end until Spring when the winter thaw begins.
“Working with the families, it was tough,” Wampler said Wednesday. He said the families were told from the beginning that “incidents on the mountain are very unforgiving.”
