Search for Steve Fossett Update: Hope Wains, Reality Sinks In

October 15, 2007

I have not made an update for quite awhile regarding the search for legendary aviator Steven Fossett.  I think most of us realized within the first couple of weeks that the ongoing search and rescue efforts being conducted around western Nevada were futile at best.

Now Richard Branson has spoken up once again.  Branson was recently featured on NBC’s “Today” Show, where he had this to say:

I think the chances are that he’s no longer with us,” Branson said. “I think everybody involved has pretty well given up hope, sadly.

Branson also said that Steve Fossett was an incredible individual.  That Steve had broke over 100 world records since reaching the age of 55, and that Fossett’s wife was starting to realize that Steve might not be coming back.

It was noted that Steve Fossett’s wife will be conducting one more search of the area in a futile attempt to find her husband before the harsh winter elements hit the area, possibly burying the plane.

Steve Fossett was lost on Sept 3., Labor Day weekend, after he failed to return from a routine flyover of an area in western Nevada.  Fossett had been out scounting areas that could have been suitable for an upcoming run at the world land speed record.  After weeks of relentless search and rescue efforts–this effort is starting to come to an end.

I’ve been following the updates. Very sad to hear that efforts to find Steve have been futile.
God bless him and his family and friends and all that have been watching this sad event.

It’s sad and very ironic that someone who’s been involved in so many risky ventures has probably been lost due to something as mundane as a scouting flight in a light aircraft.

He will doubtless be remembered for his numerous high-profile achievements. It would be nice if some type of Trust could be established as a memorial, perhaps something to help disadvantaged youngsters to experience adventurous activities which may perhaps not be on offer to them otherwise, perhaps even set the occasional record!

    Hey Chris,

Thanks for stopping by. I actually think this sounds like a pretty good idea. Actually, Fossett’s family should do this on their own…I mean..the guy was a billionaire!

Prays go out to the family. Since sept. 3rd I have
been watching and reading everything about Steve
Fossett, for my boyfriend meet him, when he was
in Newport RI on Playstation. I have learned alot about who Steve Fossett is from him. For my boyfriend is a naval architect and has designed sailing yachts for years all over the world. All the adventures and accomplisments Steve Fossett did are amazing. I am going to buy the book “Chasing Winds” for I believe it is truley filled with goals and ideals, which made the impossible be possible. I believe Steve Fossett quoted something saying don’t let anything stop you from what you want to accomplish. Do it, make it happen. God Bless all!

I wanted to be the fictional Thomas Crown (aviator, sailor, liver-of-life-to-the-fullest) until I discovered Steve Fossett. I had been following his exploits and rooting for him for about a decade until he disappeared into the desert. I admired his understated style, and wanted to emulate him in lots of ways - businessman adventurer who loved a challenge. Sad to come to the understanding that someone like that is lost.

I have felt so sad from Sept. 3 when I first heard the news. This extraordinary human being that has accomplished so much and has been so quiet in his accomplishments to fall off the face of the earth essentially is a travesty.

I never met Steve Fossett, but I have followed his many adventures from afar and his EXTREME determination.

I frankly, will never feel the same until the truth comes out about his dissapearance. My believe is that he had a medical problem while in flight that is unknown and was not foreseen.

God bless his wife, who loved him beyond words, and his children that were so blessed to have a father that was Steve Fossett.

    History will remember Steve Fossett!!!!!
