EVEREST 2008: Nepal Ban on Everest? Nepal Refutes Claims
March 18, 2008
Nepal has issued a statement clarifying that it has not imposed any ban on Mt. Everest as requested by the Chinese Government
In a brief statement to the press, Nepal’s Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation dismissed reports that it had effectively suspended expeditions from attempting to climb Mt. Everest, as the Chinese government requested.
The brief statement did not state if this was in resolve to the issue of Nepal limiting expeditions to the summit of Mt. Everest till May 10th. As far as I know, this issue is still being discussed with a possible answer to follow later in the week. At this point in time, Nepal is considering all options, but would prefer to allow the climbing expeditions to go on as planned, as it brings much needed jobs and revenue to the Mt. Everest region.

The latest news indicate that the Nepalese government did cave in under the Chinese pressure and they will not allow climbs above C2 prior to May 1 with internment in BC between May 1 and 10.
Could a lawsuit be brought against IOC and the torch relay sponsors by all the parties impacted by their negligence, total disregard for the impact of the activities they support and the failure to distance themselves publicly from this outrageous implementation plan and to protest it before China?
Actually, Ion, to refute just a bit–the answer you have is correct. That news came previous to reports that Nepal was going to step aside and ban expeditions altogether on everest this season. This report came after Nepal put out a post saying that a complete ban was just ‘rumors’. Whichever way you look at it, many teams do not even attempt a summit from the South till after May 15th, anyways. The May 1-10 ban to basecamp will do little more than hold up a little more time. There will still be a climbing season on Everest this year.
