Everest 2008: Tibet Closed to Tourists till AFTER Olympics?

April 10, 2008

Reuters is reporting today that China has decided NOT to reopen Tibet to foreigners on May 1st. Instead, China will wait till after the 2008 Beijing Olympics to allow foreign tourists back in to the troubled country.

Originally China had stated that it would open up the borders of Tibet on May 1st.

The National Tourism Administration and the Tibetan Government have not acknowledged this information at this time, nor have made any comments to suggest that the May 1st. date has been scrapped.

The information from Reuters is coming from a US based Tibetan Rights Group–The International Campaign for Tibet.

If this comes out to be true, Tibet could possibly lose upwards of $17.5 million dollars related to the tourism industry.

“Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said the government of
the Tibet Autonomous Region was trying its best to restore normalcy and
said the current restrictions “were a special arrangement for a special
period.

They did fail to confirm or deny the “After Olympics” opening of Tibet

Can’t say I’d be too surprised if this were to happen. The Chinese have a big black eye right now over the whole Tibetan fiasco, and they’re likely to want to keep things on lock-down rather than risk further demonstrations.

I hope it’s not true, but I won’t be shocked if this comes to pass. :(

I agree with Kraig. If this turns out to be true, I think China is probably doing some damage control until after the Olympics. I would like to see them addressing these issues instead of sweeping them under the rug, though.

    Hey Mike,

Thanks for stopping. I do have a suggestion, though. Next time you comment, don’t include your business as the name–then your name below, in your comment. Makes me think you are just trying to drive traffic. If this is not the case, please use your name next time rather than the business address. If I see it again, you will be banned. If, on the other hand, you would like to try to drive some REAL traffic to your site—I do offer different advertising packages that we could discuss. The choice in yours. I have deleted your business address. Thanks.

Got something to say?
