New Zealand “Summits for Ed” Hillary
April 10, 2008
The Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoors Pursuits Center, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary, has taken a note from Sir Ed and incorporated it into a great way to pass along Edmund Hillary’s passion for the outdoors, passion for educating kids as well as a memorial to the late founder of the center.
The Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoors Pursuits Center has embarked on a tour of New Zealand to celebrate Sir Edmund’s life and passions.
Each ‘Summit for Ed‘ event includes a summit climb on a nearby peak where a brief ceremony to mark his legacy is held. The climb then moves into ‘donation’ mode. The Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoors Pursuits Center is looking to establish a cairn in the memory of Sir Ed on Mt. Ruapehu. They are currently looking for donations for this project, which includes purchasing a rock with your name engraved, for placement in the memorial–or, you can bring your own rock and make the donation a bit cheaper.
Donations will also be taken for The Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation which helps to get financially disadvantaged kids out and into the wilds to learn about the great outdoors.
The next ‘Summit for Ed‘ event will take place on Mangere Mountain, New Zealand.
