Everest 2008: We Knew it Would Happen…Alan Arnette Notes Dispatches will Resume in May

April 15, 2008

I have just been updated through Alan Arnette’s email dispatches that his dispatches will resume sometime in mid-may. Wish I had more for you, but oddly enough, at this point, his post is titled “Dispatches to Resume in Mid-May” with nothing else as far as a post–

What is known: If you have been following along here at The Adventurist, or at other sites following this season’s Everest Expeditions such as ExplorersWeb, The Adventure Blog, or quite possibly on some of the Expedition websites, then you will already be familiar with the idea that Nepal has chosen to follow an act that China layed down for this years Everest season–a strict ban on communications up to May 10th. The Nepali Liaison officers are confiscating any electronic devices used to communicate abroad in an effort to cut back on Press or News in the region until May 10th–the date China has decided as the end of their 2008 Beijing Olympic Torch Run up the North side of Everest.

I made a post earlier about Nepal military showing up today at Basecamp (Thanks, Kraig) We were all wondering exactly when the commnication ban was to take effect. I guess with one simple sentence, Alan Arnette has let us know-

“Dispatches Will Resume in Mid-May”

I haven’t been to any of the other Expedition sites of yet, to see if they have posted anything in regards to this matter, so a future update is possible on this matter.

This will definitely make my job a bit harder over the coming days–hopefully someone will be talking somewhere, because if not, then my Everest coverage for 2008 may just have to wait till May 10th as well. Will post more tomorrow-
