Adventure Hall of Fame: Vote For The Next Inductee…

July 9, 2008

The Adventure Hall of Fame has received some good interest over the past week.  Many people have chimed in with their thoughts and suggestions on who or what events should be included in the next vote.  It has now become time to narrow the field down to 10.  These 10 individuals and events will be narrowed down to two, on Saturday.

If you would like to read more about the Adventure Hall of Fame, or how this process works, feel free to read my first post concerning this ongoing project.  This is a community project.  Simply stated, the Adventure Hall of Fame will present the biggest events and people that have helped shape our adventure world and expanded upon what we know.

Last week,  I opened up the voting to decide the next inductee.  I was looking for a list of 10 individuals or events, that would then be narrowed down, through voting, to two.  Many people made their suggestions and joined in on the fun.  It is now time to narrow that field down to ten.

Once the list is presented, feel free to comment on why someone or something should be included, or why not.  From this list, two individuals or events will be decided upon.  This is your chance to get involved make a vote, and take part in recording our adventure heritage.

Click below for the ten individuals or events up for nomination into the Adventure Hall of Fame.

  1. Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton
  2. Reinhold Messner
  3. Yuri Gagarin
  4. Sir Edmond Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s ascent of Mt. Everest
  5. John Muir
  6. Marco Polo
  7. The First Ascent of the Eiger
  8. Robert Peary
  9. Charles Lindbergh
  10. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark

You can definitely see that this is a tough list.  You can read more about each individual or event by clicking the name.   I am looking for your votes for or against, as well as reasonings on why someone or something should or should not be represented.  Your votes are what count.  Who should be the next inductee into the Adventure Hall of Fame?

To keep up on this voting process, make sure to subscribe to The Adventurist RSS Feed or Email Newsletter for the latest updates.  You may also subscribe to just this post’s comments by way of RSS, to keep up on how the voting is going.  Saturday this list will be narrowed down to two–so get your votes in early and make sure they are counted!

I have to go with Yuri Gagarin. First human in space and first to orbit the Earth. That had to be scary. They probably had no idea if he could get up and back safely.

John Muir, for the weight of a life and legacy, even though others may have more impressive individual exploits.

He democratized and popularized adventure as a lifestyle.

Surprisingly, John Muir has jumped into an early lead with the voting. It shouldn’t be that big of a surprise, but it is quite surprising to myself. I am not going to mention who I thought would be a front-runner, but I can say that he/they haven’t been mentioned yet.

Please remember that there is only one more day of voting, then I narrow the list down to two. Who do you want to see make it?

I am going to have to go with Kristine on this one - Yuri Gagarin. He ventured into a medium that was truly unknown. All are worthy candidates but Yuri’s journey was a first.

Yuri Gagarin has evened up the score. This could really be a closer vote than I thought. Maybe I should have developed a tie breaker system..haha. If it comes up, I will have to think of something.

There is still plenty of time for an underdog to snag some votes and get in the running. Who do you want it to be?

Got something to say?
