‘Race the Rockies’ Canadian Adventure Race Cancelled After Competitor Death

July 21, 2008

Canadian adventure racer Marty Lund collapsed and died while taking part in British Columbia’s famed ‘Race the Rockies’ Adventure Race. The 46-year-old adventure racer was found by another team after collapsing on the course near Mt. Seven in the Beaverfoot Range. Efforts to revive Lund at the scene were unsuccessful and his cause of death is still a mystery. Race organizers quickly canceled the remainder of the event.

Marty Lund, who was an experienced adventure racer, had taken part in adventure racing activities since 2003. He had participated in every ‘Race the Rockies’ challenge since it’s inception. Last year Lund placed 23rd in the ‘Race the Rockies’ event and was currently listed in 10th place this season before his collapse.

The ‘Race the Rockies’ Adventure Race is an 18 hour event that has competitors take part in paddling, hiking, biking, and swimming. Competitors are required to carry a list of survival gear with them during the race. Those items include cellphones, radios, sleeping bags, a winter jacket, flares, and a complete survival kit.
