Strange Happenings: Fisherman Kills Himself With 3oz Sinker Attached To His Own Pole
July 30, 2008
A Long Island man has killed himself, unvoluntarily, with the 3oz. lead sinker he was using while fishing.
Channel 7 News, out of Boston, MA, is reporting that the fisherman was fishing off the end of Jones Beach, in Long Island when the accident took place.
A neurologist at Nassau University Medical Center says the lead weight from Chicas’ fishing pole hit with “so much force that it kept going” and lodged in the back of his head.
The force of the sinker caused severe head trauma and herniation to the man’s brain.
I really can’t even picture how this could happen. I have done a lot of fishing and I don’t ever recall hitting myself with the sinker. Sure, I have lodged a fishing hook in the back of my head, my back, and my hand, but who hasn’t? Hooks are a bit different than sinkers. They have points.
It just goes to show you that lead sinkers are not only a cause of concern for the environment and wildlife, but if not in the right hands, they can also lead to a tragically weird death. Just something to think about next time you are casting away-

How in the world did that happen? The only thing I can think of is his line snapped somehow and catapulted the sinker.
Oh man. That’s sad. It’ll make me think twice about those tiems when I get hung p on the bottom and just start pulling on the rod to break it off! Shallow water, that sucker could be coming right for me.
Yeah. I’m not sure how it happened either. Either he had REALLY long arms, A REALLY long pole, or, the swing of Tiger Woods. Seriously, I just don’t see how this happened. A 3 oz. sinker is a rather large weight, but how do you impale your head with it?

don’t get me wrong this tragic, but sounds more like murder.. this I HOPE is investigated thoroughly !!! i can not physically see a 3oz weight could lodge into a skull like this.
as a fisherman i can’t imagine how this happened, maybe investigators should look at the hole, which could be from something else and sinker added later. it seems very suspicious to me
Then you have never been fishing like this. During a practice round at the US Sportcasting competition at Salvo, NC - the shock leader broke during the backcast and a 5.25 weight blasted through the radiator of a pickup parked 30 yards behind the caster! I’ll tell you how this(likely) happened - the guy had gradually reeled his rig closer and closer, felt a bite/wave…set the hook and with nothing to stop it, the flex of a surf rod and stretch of the monofilament launched it directly backward toward his head - poor bastard.
Nice input, Kevin. So this is quite unusual, but has actually caused some damage before with other fishermen. Thanks for your input.
