Mountain Bike Venue Confirmed For 2012 London Olympics

August 12, 2008

The 2008 Beijing Olympics are still going on, yet, officials in London are already making plans for the 2012 Olympics that will be featured on their home turf.  The London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games has announced that the 2012 London Olympics mountain biking events will be staged at Hadleigh Farm, Essex.

BikeBiz.com has a nice aerial photo of where the new Olympic venue will be.  The area comprises of 550 acres and includes some more challenging terrain, something that the mountain biking organizers have been fighting for.

The announcement of Hadleigh Farm as the home to the 2012 London Olympic mountain biking events comes just seven months after organizers originally picked an area near Benfleet, in Essex.  The first venue was scrapped after people started speaking out about the simple terrain, including other organizors.  The new vene offers up a more challenging course, as well as plenty of room for spectators.

The UCI has approved the new course near Benfleet in Essex. The route weaves through grassland, woodland and masses of the Hadleigh castle countryside. Two major hills feature, separated by a valley, which will provide technical climbs and descents.
