Climbers Get Trashed In Yosemite

October 3, 2008

The 5th Annual Yosemite Facelift took place last week and offered many climbers the opportunity to get trashed and still know what they were doing and where they were going.  This annual event in Yosemite National Park is an all weekend clean-up project initiated by the Yosemite Climbing Association to help clean up one of the United States’ premier national parks.

During this past five day event, more than 35,000 pounds of trash and litter were removed from Yosemite National Park.  That may seem like a huge amount of refuse to take out at one time, but organizers maintain that since this event kicked off in 2003 that the annual take-out from Yosemite National Park has dropped.  That is a good sign that this event is helping to solve a big problem in one of our nation’s most visited parks.

Each morning participants picked up trash collecting paraphenalia and registered for the gear raffle at day’s end. Each night there was free entertainment, including slide shows by the likes of Glen Denny, Don Lauria, Dave Nettle, and the hilarious Timmy O’Neil. The Reel Rock Film Tour also made a stop for the event. The Facelift concluded with a big party featuring free food and live music.

The above paragraph is coming from the American Alpine Institute blog.  American Alpine Institute had representatives on hand to help in this good cause and to share in the fun of cleaning up and hanging out with many of those that were taking part.  For once, getting trashed at Yosemite has taken on a whole new meaning.  Thanks for getting out there and getting involved.  Now if we could just get everyone from throwing that trash on the ground to begin with!!
