New Book Explores The Life Of Kelly Slater, Nine-time Surfing World Champion

Kelly Slater recently won his 9th World Surfing Championship, an unprecedented number that lines him up to considered the greatest surfer of all-time.  If Kelly Slater were Lance Armstrong, he would still need two more Tour de France victories to match this accomplishment.  That is a huge feat that may not be surpassed…EVER.

Kelly Slater, being in a sport that draws a special crowd of onlookers, hasn’t been represented to much in the mainstream press.  As a matter of fact, unless you visit a couple of blogs, or the few surfing publications in existance, you may not even know who he is.  That is kind of sad for someone who has won nine world titles. I guess everyone is more intrigued by Lance Armstrong, whose face probably has it’s own branded wallpaper for homes.  Sorry, but that guy is everywhere!

Kelly Slater has been around the world of surfing for many years and has dominated the sport, thought by many, to be that of the ‘younger generation’.  Kelly will finally be getting his say-and some much deserved kudos-for changing the world of surfing forever.

On November 17, 2008, Chronicle Books will be releasing “Kelly Slater:  For the Love”.  This 192 page book will take a look at the life of Kelly Slater through personal interviews and more than 200 photos of the man.  The interviews will include some pretty intriguing tales by some of his more notable friends (Jack Johnson, Eddie Vedder, Pamela Anderson, Tom Curren, Shaun Thompson, and more).

Veteran surf journalist Phil Jarret has spent an enormous amount of time interviewing Slater and his friends.  This book will take an inside look at the world of being a top pro surfer, as well as touch base on many of the topics close to Kelly’s heart:  the environment, politics, music, and of course surfing.

If your interested in picking up this book on Pro Surfer Kelly Slater, be sure to check out the Chronicle Books website.  I think the going rate will come out at $35.00 when it is released on November 17th.  This is just a guess, but I am betting that his is going to be a coffee-table sized book with some really spectacular photography.  There is nothing better in the winter than to kick back, hit ‘play’ on that Jack Johnson cd, then flip through some pages of fantastic wave riding while dreaming of 2009.  I/m already getting my winter blues.
