Korean Team Of Organ Donors To Attempt Summit On Island Peak

December 11, 2008

A group of 10 organ transplant recipients and donors from Korea will be attempting to scale one of the Himalayas most prized peaks.  Island Peak stands at 6,189 meters and offers a quick challenge to climbers that are usually training for bigger peaks-namely Mt. Everest.  Island peak is not the hardest peak, nor the tallest, but it is a peak that nearly every climber in the Himalayas attempt at one time or another.  Add in the factor that the group going has all donated a part of themselves (literally) and will be climbing in the Himalayan winter, we suddenly start to get an understanding that this expedition may be something to keep our eyes on.

This expedition has been organized by Seoul National University Hospital and sponsored by Novartis Korea.  The team will be lead and guided by Park Young-Seok, a climber who has become a celebrity for his big climbs and guided expeditions in Korean.

The Seoul National University Hospital received 40 applications for this ’specialized’ expedition.  10 individuals were chosen.  Those ten then went on to receive extensive mountain climbing training.  The hospital is hoping that this expedition will bring added attention and awareness to organ donors and those who receive them.  This expedition will be very interesting to watch as it starts to take shape over the next 10 days.  Let’s wish them all well, and a safe expedition!
