“One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 2008″

The above slogan landed 5 Americans in some deep trouble today on Mt. Everest’s North Basecamp as Chinese authorities detained them for protesting the Chinese Olympic Torch run up Mt. Everest for the 2008 Olympics.

It is pretty wide spread news that China is currently holding a “practice run” of the torch ceremony this season on Everest.

The activists, all members of “Students for a Free Tibet”, were staging a protest involving banners that proclaim ” One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 2008″.

The Chinese Olympic slogan for 2008:  “One World, One Dream.”

Many people have began to raise an issue with China over their use of Tibet as a site for part of their Olympic Torch run.  The activists claim that China’s use of Mt. Everest is being done to undermine the real issue of the people of Tibet, and that is their freedom and their country back.

For more on this, I will send you over to the Associated Press’ great story found HERE.

At this time, it is not currently known what will happen to these american activists.  It has been noted though that their passports have been taken away and they are still being held.

An ongoing battle has been raging since 1951 when China first came to occupy Tibet.

Sir Edmund Hillary: Your Thoughts, Your Prayers

It is being widely reported today that Sir Edmund Hillary has been injured in a fall.  Sir Hillary was the first person, along with his climbing sherpa Tenzing Norgay, to summit Mt. Everest.  It has been noted that Hillary is not suffering “Life-Threatening” injuries and that his progress is going well.

Hillary is 87 years old and has recently taken up walking with a cane.  It is also being reported that Sir Edmund Hillary has been suffering from High Altitude Sickness for a number of years now.

In due respect for what Sir Edmund Hillary has come to mean and represent in the climbing community, I thought that it would be a good time for all of my loyal readers here at The Adventurist to wish Sir Edmund Hillary the best.  Today we keep you in all of our thoughts and prayers!

You, the reader, may post your thoughts, prayers, and good wishes upon Sir Edmund Hillary here, as we all come together to wish him a fast recovery

As many of you might know, a couple of months back I mentioned that I would be setting up a Page on The Adventurist for the Everest 2007 Climbing season.

This page will be similar to the page covering the Mt. Hood Tragedy I covered in 2006 offering up all the links and stories as we publish them in one easily located space.

What this does is it allows all of my loyal readers an easier way to follow along with the Everest 2007 season as it happens, as well as lets you keep track of what HAS happened up to the latest story.  At the top of this site, you will now see a headline that reads “The Complete Coverage!  Everest 2007!  Click Here!”, by clicking this, you will now have access to every story concerning the 2007 Everest Climbing season.

I hope you enjoy this convenient way of staying on track with the happenings on Everest this season.  It is really shaping up to be a great season with many stories breaking daily.  You will now find them all here!

Orlando Bloom to Scale Everest?

Hollywood heart throb and A list actor Orlando Bloom has recently been tossing around the idea of attempting an Everest Expedition.

Orlando Bloom is famous for appearing in “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy as well as “The Pirates of the Carribean”.

So why Orlando want to do this expedition?  To him, it has been a lifelong dream to climb the world’s tallest mountain.  Plus, he says, it would get get him away from “acting” and give him a much needed break.

Orlando Bloom is wanting to do this sooner rather than later–with a possible time being this summer.  This will be an interesting story to watch that is bound to garner a lot of attention as it developes.

Everest 2007 Update 3-28-07 Gavin Bates

Gavin Bates’ team has successfully arrived in Kathmandu.

Gavin Bates will be trying to tackle two 8,000ers on this expedition–Cho Oyu and Everest.  This will make Gavin’s fourth expedition to Everest, but this year he will be trying to tackle the summit from the North Side, then descend down the South.

For Gavin’s Cho Oyu climb, he will be sharing the experience with 5 team members from Adventure Alternative–He will be joined by co-guide Steve Pinfield and Sherpa Pesang Tendi.

From Gavin’s April ascent of Cho Oyu, he will then walk to Everest and ascend by the North Face and the Northwest Ridge, and planning to do so with no camp stops and carrying a small tent for self-support.

Gavin will then atempt to come down the Southeast Ridge and the South Col, ending in Nepal.  He is estimating his total time on Everest to be 55-60 hours, with a possiblesummit attempt taking place May 16-28.

Gavin has previously (2005) climbed Everest without supplemental oxygen in one push from Camp 2, and he is banking on this previous experience to help him out here as well.

He says his biggest problem may become the weather, as both sides of Everest are rarely clear at the same momment.

Accompanying Gavin on his Everest push will be one lone sherpa, Pesang Tendi.  Pesang Tendi will only be there if Gavin collapses or needs outside help getting down from Everest.

This is a solo mission for Gavin and once again he will be climbing without supplemental oxygen.

Here is his first update from Kathmandu:

24th March

Hi everyone! The team for Cho Oyu all arrived safe and well in Kathmandu and have had a busy few days finalising kit, equipment and supplies before the journey to their base camp. They are now in China at Zhangmu. Yesterday Gavin and Elli met the highest Guru in Kathmandu for a traditional blessing. They then had a wonderful evening with all Gavin’s Sherpa friends before starting their journey. They will be the second team into Base Camp on Cho Oyu. All updates will be posted here as the climb of Cho Oyu and Everest advance. The team sends a big HI, to all their friends, family and supporters at home.

The Laneo Phenom

Snowboard

Editor’s Note:  I came across Laneo through another site–actually the reason I “clicked” was because of the very unique look of their ads…and since I run an “Adventure” website, well it was natural for me to check out what it was about.  Folks, this is a great company trying to do something for this World.  There is no money involved–I do not support advertising on this site–but, to me, this is not advertising as they are not selling a product.  This is one way you can help change the world without spending a dime!  Something that I think all of us have an issue with is making sure that this planet is around for quite a few more generations, and by joining this site and placing an “ad”, you too can be a part of making a difference. Now about the company. Read more

The Adventurist: Global Visitors Debugged

I posted a day or two ago about how I added a new feature to “The Adventurist” called Global Visitors.  What this does is it allows me to see where The Adventurist is being read by state and country.

Well, the first day I had it up–it worked smooth for about an hour, then it lost contact with my site…I had to go back through and redo everything–

The good news is that it is working great now–you may view this new feature by scrolling down the left-hand sidebar till you see “Global Visitors”.  This gives you a list of where everyone comes from that has viewed this site.

Just going on today’s stats alone, “The Adventurist” has recieved visitors from 16 different U.S. states and five foreign countries including Spain, France, India, Canada, and the UK.

Also, the same day I added this new feature to The Adventurist, I also added the “Blogtopsites” button just below the Global Visitors.  This is a ranking of the top sites in a few given catagories–”The Adventurist” being listed in the Sports catagory…at listing time, this site was raked 399th–we are now sitting at 243rd–an advancement of 156 spots in only two days.  The Adventurist is also ranked 5th in the “Adventure” catagory overall.

This site is starting to get the following and become pretty well known for being the best adventure blog on the net.  Thanks to all of you readers for helping me try to achieve my goals with this site.  Hope you will enjoy your stay–checkout the archives if you like–and possibly learn something you didn’t know before stopping by.

Cheers-

J. Alan Hendricks, Editor “The Adventurist”
