Dave Hahn, Famed Adventure Guide And Everest Record Holder, Nominated For “Best Outdoor Athlete” ESPY Award From ESPN

July 11, 2008

Dave Hahn has been nominated for a “Best Outdoor Athlete” ESPY award by ESPN. This is some big news in the world of Mountain Climbing. The ESPN ESPY awards represent an attempt to honor and reward athletes for their contributions throughout the previous year–think the Grammy awards of the sporting world.

Many people who read this site have heard of Dave Hahn through my Mt. Everest coverage. This season, Dave Hahn was successful in reaching his 10th summit of the world’s highest peak. Dave’s tenth summit represents the most successful Everest summits by a non-Sherpa climber. Quite a record!

This isn’t all Dave is being noted for during the ESPY nomination process. Jake Norton, who tipped me off to Dave’s nomination and runs the MountainWorld website, has went in to a few more details about his close friend and fellow climber and guide:

  • Reached the summit of Everest 10 times - more than any non-Nepali
  • Reached the summit of Mt. Vinson in Antarctica a record 25 times (and counting)
  • Climbed McKinley lots of times, and Rainier even more
  • Traversed South Georgia Island a handful of times
  • Worked as a guide for some 20 years, leading clients up mountains around the world

Dave Holds the record for most successful summits on Antarctica’s highest peak, as well, Mt. Vinson.

Along with all the climbing records Dave has amassed, he has also been involved and help carry out some of the most high-profile Mt. Everest rescues of the past few years. It is nice to see Dave get some recognition in the mainstream world. Not many climbers have a chance to reach that plateau.

The ESPN ESPY awards are voted upon by the public. I would encourage you to stop on over and VOTE FOR DAVE HAHN for this year’s “Best Outdoor Athlete” award. Let’s get a climber to the podium. Especially one that is as top-notch as Dave Hahn. Way to go Dave, and good luck!

If you would like to read a bit more about Dave Hahn, as well as some inside info by way of his good friend Jake Norton, head over to Jake’s MountainWorld blog to read “Vote For Dave Hahn For The ESPY“. Thanks for the tip, Jake!
