Today’s Discussion: What’s One Book That Influenced Your Love Of The Outdoors?

October 29, 2008

All of us have been influenced at one time or another by an individual or book that we thought best represents the way we feel.  Many of us who partake in the great outdoors on a regular basis probably owe more than we realize to a perceptions first brought about by reading a great outdoor adventure or how-to guide.  Perhaps the biography of John Muir set you off on a path of conservation and discovery.  Maybe Jon Krakauer’s “Into Thin Air” influenced you to go climbing that first mountain.  Whatever the book (or article) I would love for you to share these influences with the rest of my readers. Please comment after the ‘jump’.

If this discussion recieves enough comments, I may make another post on The Adventurist in the next couple of days with a list of influential works that some of us may have not read, or even forgot about over the course of time.  Have some fun with this one and share with us the one book that has influenced your outdoor love, or life, the most.  Feel free to add in some points of why you liked this book and it’s overall effect on your life, as well.  Comment below.

Tough to choose! There are so many depending upon the adventures…
Early on, it would have to be “The Man Who Travelled Through Time” by Colin Fletcher… I loved his way of engaging us through his tales of trekking… His connection with the wild places inspired me greatly to try and bring that appeciation of nature into my own life…

Someone has to mention it — Walden. Also, The Maine Woods and Thoreau’s essay on Walking. Reading Thoreau first drove home for me that you can’t think about human society critically if you can’t ever step outside of it, even if only for a few hours, here and there.

I don’t have one book in particular, but I can say that reading all those books about Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett in grade school definitely influenced my love for the outdoors.
