Everest: A Climb for Peace

April 1, 2008

Everest: A Climb for Peace is a new documentary that should be hitting the shelves shortly chronicalling a United Nations endorsed climb up the world’s highest peak. The climb takes place in 2006 and involves nine individuals from nine different cultural and religious backgrounds. The documentary is being narrated by none other than Orlando Bloom, who I have posted about in the past as having a slight affinity for wanting to try Mt. Everest himself.

Lance Trumbull, the man behind Everest: A Climb for Peace, recently had a chat with the crew at FilmStew about why this documentary is important now and what his thoughts are on the recent unrest in Tibet and the outlying areas, as well as his thoughts on the current regulations being handed down to climbers for the 2008 Spring Everest expedition season.

“As most already know, China plans to take the Olympic torch to the
summit of Mount Everest. But because China is afraid of protesters and
bad PR about the Tibetan cause that may occur on the mountain – they
decided to close down the Tibetan [norh] side of Everest for all other
climbers except the Chinese until at least May 10th. This has destroyed
plans for hundreds of mountaineers planning to summit Everest this year
from Tibet.

The Dalai Lama recently sent a letter to Lance Trumbull in regards to his latest project. About Everest: A Climb for Peace, he states that this

“reinforces my strong belief that if we adapt the right approach and
make a determined effort, cooperation, trust and understanding can
always be established for a true and worthy cause.

THIS is a pretty interesting article on the documentary that seems to be making the current rounds in the press. With major names attached to this finished project, as well as a call for peace, not only in Tibet but around the world, this documentary could see a pretty big release. It is also noted that one climber who participated was Ali Bushnaq, a Palestinian. Ali Bushnaq, summited Mt. Everest with Dudu Yifrah and Micah Yaniv-two Israelis. They always say that politics has no place in climbing, but when it comes to a good cause, it is nice that some of the hostilities around the world can be put aside for a momment of peace.
