Backpacker Magazine Launches Online Blogs
April 1, 2008
If you haven’t been to Backpacker Magazine lately, I highly suggest you give them another look. I think the Online presence of Backpacker Magazine has greatly benefited from it’s most recent upgrade. They are now offering numerous articles, trail guides, gear reviews, survival skills ect. in a new format that completely makes-over their previous site that had little more to offer than a current article or two.
Their newest feature, or the biggest ‘new feature’ that they have incorporated, has got to be the Backpacker Blogs. I recently posted about National Geographic: Adventure adapting to the blog world, and it looks as if Backpacker Magazine will be giving it a run as well.
Backpacker Magazine’s current blogs:
- The Daily Dirt - The Nitty and the Gritty of Outdoor News
- The Pulse - Your source for survival skills and more from Rocky Mountain Editor Steve Howe
- Peak Fitness - Your Guide to staying trail-ready with Grant Davis
Some very good information can be found on all three blogs, with each of them being pretty self-explanatory. The launching pad for the blogs can be easily navigated from one to the next from the Blog main page.
I do have a slight recommendation to Backpacker Magazine though concerning their new implementation of the Blogs. I gave this same recommendation to National Geographic: Adventure when they first began their site. Here’s the recommendation–
I discovered their blogs after The Adventurist was linked through an article on their site. They need to make them more accessible. Unless you are actually looking for them on the Backpacker Magazine front page, it is hard to find. Other than that, looks to be a great addition to the blogging world and am sure I will be stopping by often. Stop by and check them out and bookmark the blogs–each of them offer up something a bit different and are a great read.
Did you like this? If so, please bookmark it, about it, and subscribe to the blog RSS feed.

I’m excited about these blogs. Backpacker’s online presence in recent years has been abysmal. I’ve read both Backpacker and Outside for years, and I’ve really liked how Outside makes most of their feature articles available online. I’m glad to see that Backpacker is beginning to realize the power of the Web.
I’ve really enjoyed NG Adventure’s blog since it’s inception. Thanks for digging up these newer blogs and bringing them to our attention.
Unfortunately, they don’t offer RSS feeds for these blogs individually.
The RSS feed mention, I will have to look into. For some odd reason I think that a lot of these sites springing into the ‘blog’ world are not utilizing everything they could be. To myself, personally, a good RSS is worth more than any advertising and generates into twice the number of hits. I will go check it out and see what is up.
By the way, why does ExplorersWeb NOT have an RSS feed for each of it’s sites? I think from a ‘management’ standpoint they think this will draw people away from stopping by. In reality, it is quite the opposite.
