Sprecher Black Bavarian Style review

Once again I find a wonderful new beer in front of me compliments of my wife! I have been enthralled with the schwartzbier style ever since dining at a German bar in Madison, WI several years ago. They had a list of authentic beers on tap that would simply astound anyone. It amazed me, and I am certainly no novice. :D

Sprecher’s Black Bavarian comes in a pint bottle. Shucks, I have to drink an entire pint? True to its name it pours black, though not so opaque as an extra stout. The head is also very tan, almost like mousse. The first sip sang of black patent malt, crisp and strong.

There is a clean flavor as a lager that stouts don’t have, making it much more appealing for a summer afternoon. It is very refreshing without the cloying sweetness that a lot of dark beers have. It actually reminds me of one of my favorite porters as well.

Over all, I’d give this one a thumbs up, or mug up? It came in a sample pack (yes, I will review all four. Thankfully there is two of each style in the sample pack. I sampled a couple last night. :) ) of eight 16 ounce bottles. I am looking forward to sampling the other styles and giving my impressions.

Cheers!
