My Hops

After reading Adam’s post about his hop growth I thought I would share my hop pictures as well. The first is Cascade that is in its second growing season. This one is really taking off and I NEED to figure out a better way to trellis these things.

The next is Willamette (I think) and this is also in its second year but this one had some early trauma last year with two of three bines broken. Because of that it’ll be pretty stunted this year as well.

And here they both are:

Its blueberries in between the two, strawberry on the left, then another blueberry and another strawberry. Now I also have to figure out how to net off the berries so birds don’t get at them.

We added the soaker hose last year as an afterthought. I’m going to have to remulch that area and get it covered better. Hey, its only the second growing season at this house!

Cheers!
Tony

I’ve been considering growing hops as well (training them to grow along the fence). I have a little blueberry patch of my own and the birds are difficult. My question to you is, do you like snakes? Because you will catch one or two in the netting. The best thing I can say is to grow enough blueberries to share with the birds.

Cool! Happy to see some progress. This is the third year for ours too. Cascade really seems to be a no brainer eh? My Willamette is having a harder time of it as well. I can’t complain. I don’t do much to keep them growing.

    Thanks for the update.

Russ, hops are so easy its almost dangerous. The hard part is keeping them contained where you want them. I’ve heard of some folks cutting the bottom off a 5 gallon bucket and burying that, with the hop root in the middle to keep it better contained. Even only in its second year (or is this the third?) they were pushing out along the mulching and fabric!

Adam, I had Fuggle and Mt Hood at the last house, and once they got into the fourth year there was no stopping them! Hops are COOL!!!
