Wal-mart and Gun Policies who Would of Thought?

Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest seller of firearms, announced Monday it will toughen rules for gun sales, from storing video of purchases to creating an internal log of which guns they sell that are later used in crimes.

J.P. Suarez, the chief compliance officer for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., appeared with outspoken gun control advocate Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York to announce the changes at a gathering of Bloomberg’s group Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Changes to come at about 1,100 Wal-Mart stores selling guns include:

1. Creating a record and alert system to record when a gun sold at Wal-Mart is later used in a crime. If the purchaser of that gun later tries to buy another gun at Wal-Mart, the system would alert the sales clerk of the prior buy and could refuse to make the sale.
2. Retaining the recorded images of gun sales in case law enforcement wants to view them later as part of an investigation 3. Expanding background checks of employees who handle guns and expanding inventory controls.

Suarez said the tougher standards will come with some additional cost to the company. “The costs are, we think, part of what it takes to be responsible. Everything is not pain-free,” he said, adding that small sellers can implement many of the same rules. He did not say how long it would take to implement all the changes, but noted that software must still be created for an internal log of guns later used in crimes. Suarez said his company may receive some pressure from gun rights groups, but added, “This is not a signal that we’re getting out of firearms.”

The National Rifle Association denounced the company’s move. “I view it as a public relations stunt that stigmatizes law-abiding firearms purchasers exercising their freedom under the Constitution,” said NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre. He said that if politicians were serious about reducing gun crime they would worry less about legal sellers and buyers and get tougher criminal sentences for illegal gun dealers. “I honestly think it’s a corporation trying to curry favor with politicians as opposed to doing anything meaningful about stopping crime,” said LaPierre.

Wal-Mart sells only rifles and shotguns in its U.S. stores, with the exception of Alaska sites, which also sell handguns. Bloomberg urged other companies to join Wal-Mart in the initiative called the Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership. “We didn’t pressure them, they’re doing it because they think it’s the responsible thing to do,” he said.

Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, had previously tried to establish a store in New York City but failed. The mayors’ gun summit also unveiled a new lobbying effort to close what they call the “gun show loophole,” which allows sales of firearms without background checks between private individuals at gun shows. Bloomberg founded the group two years ago with Boston mayor Thomas Menino to reduce the flow of guns from store displays into the hands of criminals.

The group, largely funded by Bloomberg’s personal fortune, announced it was spending more than $100,000 on television ads, starting Wednesday, featuring all three of the current main presidential candidates voicing their opposition to the gun show loophole. The ads will run in the home states of the three candidates — John McCain of Arizona, Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois. It also will air across Pennsylvania, which holds its primary next week, as well as Florida, Maryland and Massachusetts.

The mayors group is trying to gather support in Congress to:

1. End the gun show loophole
2. Require gun dealers to perform criminal background checks on all gun-handling employees.
3. Close a so-called fire-sale loophole that allows gun dealers whose licenses have been revoked by the government to sell off their inventory without background checks.

4. Add those placed on the terrorist no-fly list to the list of people prohibited from purchasing a firearm.

Sierra Sportsmen Network Kicking off a New Website with a Photography Contest!

weblogo_fall2002.gifSierra Sportsmen Network is holding a fishing and hunting photo contest in celebration of the launch of its new website, www.sierrasportsmen.org. With 20% of Sierra Club members fishing and hunting, they realize that conservation has a big role to play in terms of maintaining wildlife populations and habitat. Sierra Sportsmen’s hope is that the new site will serve as a hub for hunters and anglers, allowing them to reach across state lines, transcend geographical barriers and connect with each other, find out about conservation issues that affect them, help pass on outdoor traditions to the next generation, restore local streams, protect game habitat, and fight global warming.

The site includes interviews with prominent figures in the outdoor movement such as President Lowell Baier of the Boone & Crockett Club, as well as conservation updates, and opportunities for sportsmen to take action on issues that affect us all. There are no Mountain Lions in Kansas!!! Yeah Right!!

707-032508mountainlion_07_standalone_prod_affiliate_80.jpglion.jpg

(photo on left-Tracy Galvin of KDWP displaying actual mountain lion shot)

For years in and around KS people have been seeing mountain lions in the state of KS.   According to the KS Wildlife and Parks that is a hoax to them.  If you call the KDWP and report a sighting of a mountain lion in KS, you will be told there are no mountain lions living in our state.  You may be even asked to take a picture for verification and evidence.  There have even been stories of a mountain lion that had a chip in it and was used by the KDWP for research.  That cat was actually shot in KS and was put in a deep freezer until the KDWP tracked it down.  As the story goes mind you………….

Local ranch owners and farmers have seen deer hanging from trees, mares with huge claw marks on their hinds from being taken down, huge paw-prints left in impressionable material and visuals have been talked about for years.  Did you know that according to KDWP mountain lions in KS just pass through our state?  They have dinner reservations in the other states like Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska.  I guess we don’t offer enough roadkill here to satisfy the cravings of a mountain lion.  So when they are walking through our tall grass, watching our ample supply of deer, drinking and playing in our vast streams and jumping from tree to tree…………….they have decided that KS just isn’t the state for them and they should press on.

Multiple stories have been written about a local man shooting a mountain lion in Barber County, KS in March.  He called the KDWP and was told there are no big cats here and that he probably saw a bobcat not a mountain lion.  So he shot it and took it to Texas to have it mounted.  Authorities have now captured the pelt and are DNA testing it to see if it was a captive cat.  Samples from South American DNA would suggest captivity, however, if North American samples are matched then the evidence would prove to be wild.  I have never in my life heard of such research done nor all the uproar mountain lions have established in the great state of Kansas.  I don’t know if the KDWP are afraid if they admit to mountain lions here they would be subject to hunters and outfitters wanting to harvest them.  Right now our law states that it is illegal to shoot a mountain lion for just his presence.  However, you are allowed to kill this animal if you or livestock is in danger or there is property damage.  The last stated and documented proof was in 1904 in Ellis County, KS.  So over 100 years this will be the first evidence that is tangible and documented.   To think this was just a lone incident and we don’t have room for mountain lions here in KS.  Because lets face it Motel 6 in Oklahoma left the lights on !!!!

Anyways no charges have been filed on this incident and lots of people have been commenting and writing stories.  You are welcome to view the story at www.hutchnews.com, www.pratttribune.com or the www.gyphillpremiere.com.  Please feel free to comment.  I would love to hear your stories and comments!!!

As Always

Introduction for Youth to Hunt and Fish From Experienced Hunters

Hooked For Life is a group of Reno County Christian sportsmen who love to hunt and fish.  Our passion is to introduce kids to the world of the outdoors.  We are offering guided hunting and fishing day trips to kids ages 11 - 15.  We are searching for youth that have an interest in the outdoors whose parents may not know much about hunting or fishing.  We encourage a parent to accompany, but the focus of the trip will be for the child.  Our goal is for your child to have a rewarding experience on their first trip to the outdoors.  These trips are offered all year long and are completely free with the exception of license fees.  For added safety, our guides have all passed complete background checks.  If your child would like to experience the outdoors, contact us for an application.  We are happy to answer any questions you may have.  We can only offer a specific number of trips each year so please don’t make promises to your child until you are notified.
