Big Ten Football Preview: Ohio St. Buckeyes vs. Youngstown St. Penguins

Hmmm, learn something new every day. I had no idea that Youngstown’s mascot was the Penguins. Most people would scoff at this and especially from a team named Youngstown St., but those who are close to the college football scene know this is a program that is very good in its own right. I say in its own right because of the fact that it is good within its division–it won a national title in 1999 in the lower division, but against the big boys, probably not so much.

Especially when you consider you are facing a team like Ohio State. Coach Jim Tressel will unveil his new team against the Penguins, and the biggest question is actually not if the Buckeyes are going to win (they haven’t lost to an in-state rival in 86 years or a season opener in 20), not even how much they are going to win by (there’s not a line, which is not a surprise), but the role that Terrelle Pryor will play with the offense.

This is no disrespect to Todd Boeckman, who already had the pressure of starting after Troy Smith last year, and while he didn’t do terribly, the offense definitely wasn’t the same. Now with Pryor and the hype breathing down his neck, it will be interesting to see as the season progresses as to how Boeckman responds to the pressure. Pryor won’t spend a lot of time chatting with his new teammates on the sidelines, in my opinion.

Youngstown St. is just simply overmatched in this game by a lot. The QB for the Penguins, Todd Rowan, has thrown just one pass in his collegiate career, and he faces a monstrous defense led by James Laurinaitis and Malcolm Jenkins, a pair that should send shivers down the majority of QBs in college football–save Tim Tebow and Matt Flynn :))–and they should feast upon Youngstown in the statistical categories.

This is clearly a game of just seeing the Buckeyes and how good they seem to be–no disrespect to Youngstown St., but this game is going to be over before it starts. Ohio State 55 Youngstown St 7
