Big Ten Football Preview: Wisconsin Badgers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Posted by Tim Gossett on September 30, 2008

My, how this game has lost its luster. With many thinking this game could decide the Big Ten championship, that idea took a huge hit as Rich Rodriguez‘ crew made the biggest comeback in the Big House’s history in beating heavily favored Wisconsin. Now after this shocking loss, Bret Bielema’s team is trying to keep things from spinning out of control. Their gift: none other than the Big Ten baddies themselves, the Ohio State Buckeyes.

With Terrelle Pryor now at the helm, the Buckeyes have regained some of the swagger they were wiped clean of in losing big-time to USC. Chris “Beanie” Wells is fully healthy, and the Buckeyes are primed to start their march towards another championship. But traveling to Madison to Camp Randall is one of the hardest places to go in the Big Ten, and Wisconsin is definitely not ready to just roll over–especially after the gutwrenching loss to the Wolverines.

Allan Evridge, while much better than when the season started, is still up for debate as to whether he is the kind of guy that can lead the Badgers to victory. He was forced to throw more in the second half against a Michigan defense that is decent but not dominant, and he didn’t get the job done. P.J. Hill is still the go-to guy but the Ohio State run defense is solid, giving up only 95 yards per game.

With Pryor and Wells forming a formidable 1-2 punch for the Buckeyes, it would seem that they have all the cards to get the job done there at Wisconsin. Pryor has been great on the run, but his passing has been suspect thus far, and the rowdiness of the crowd will be certain to rattle him at times. Wells’ return against the Gophers was successful, gaining 106 on 14 carries–and he faces a Badger team that has only given up 72 ypg over the last three. That being said, while the Buckeyes have the pub, don’t underestimate the will of the Badgers–yes, they lost a game they should have won easily, but this is also the team that marched into Fresno State and made out of that tough venue with a win. Ohio State hasn’t exactly been dominant in any game this year, and Pryor is still learning his way around the field in Big Ten play. While the Buckeyes are almost a field goal favorite at this point, I am going to go with the Badgers to regain some respect and dump the Buckeyes. My final prediction: Wisconsin 24, Ohio State 21
