Home made turkey soup and ham soup
Posted by Tony Treml on December 2, 2009
It wasn’t until earlier this week have I ever considered using the “left overs” from the turkey carving or the ham bone to make a stock for soup. I don’t know what I was thinking! Wait… wasn’t thinking…
Onward.
After Thanksgiving my father in law insisted that I save the ham bone with plenty of meat left on it. I humored him thinking I’d just pick it clean later and toss the thing. Unfortunately the turkey carcass already went out right away, otherwise I’d have done the same with it. I can’t believe how wasteful it is to toss out the leavings without extracting every bit of goodness!
A quick search of Allrecipes provided me with the usual plethora of recipes to choose from. If you haven’t searched on there yet, we highly recommend it.
Something to think about to stretch those big money items a little further. It also really helps to watch the sales and pick up turkeys and hams when they are heavily discounted. Usually right before holidays is when I find the best prices, and I pick up at least two through the week.
Peace!
Tony
