I’ve never met Ms. Anastasia over at That’s Probably Not How it Happened but I found her blog through dn’s blogroll at Tornado Slide. Her writing generally makes me laugh and occasionally reminds me of Lawrence. Anyway, apparently she went on her first turkey hunt.

Everything about it was so cool. Even the fact that we sat in mud through torrential rains was just great. The guys were so nice, the farm was beautiful, the air was sweet, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with my first hunting trip.

Opening Day at The K

A friend and frequent source for legal appeals knowledge runs the blog Fountain Shots.

Unfortunately he’s a K-State fan, (and you know how I feel about K-State) but otherwise he’s a loyal fan of the local Kansas City teams. Anyway, he went to opening day at the renovated Kauffman Stadium yesterday and returned with some beautiful pictures. Take a look.

We’re back from our trip to Philly and DC. My best friend from kindergarten through college is in his final year of residency at University of Pennsylvania. My wife and I met up with him and his wife and baby boy and headed to DC for the weekend. Both wives had never been. We hit the usual sights including the museums and monuments.

The Old Man and a member of our ill-fated journey to the artic north spent last weekend quail hunting in Southwest Texas with a friend who manages his land primarily for birds. Unfortunately the dry weather hurt their production and they only got into 8-10 coveys a day. So one evening they quit early and pig hunted.

conducting a night fox hunt on Dec 17, 2008. In short he needs
extensive surgeries and most of a chance to regain eyesight in his
left eye.

Colder than Crap!

More ugliness this weekend during my ongoing attempt to get a friend his first deer. We struggled to beat the weather this time. Saturday the wind absolutely howled. Deer sightings were few and far between. The wind blew all night Saturday out of the South. At sunrise Sunday morning it was 61 degrees. At sunset it was 13. About mid-day the wind shifted to the Northwest and the bottom fell out. The wind just cut through me. I’ve hunted dozens of days a year for the many years. I can’t remember being colder.

The good news was that it pushed the deer to food sources. The bad news was that it was nearly impossible to sit on a stand. During the afternoon hunt we saw a total of 9 does but no shots were fired. Bad communication, mind numbing cold, and a rookie hunter conspired against us.

Unfortunately that brings the Kansas general rifle season to a close. Fortunately there is still an opportunity during the late antlerless season. I’ve held off on taking does myself because I’d rather help others first and I plan to bowhunt some over the Christmas break. After all, it looks like the duck season is over. You can walk across every marsh in Kansas by now.

Judge Him By His Heart!

I have an off-season weakness for human vs. human Madden competition. While my skill has diminished significantly since the glory days when I didn’t have a job or wife, I still try to get in a few games when I’m not hunting. Amazingly, I’ve never seen the phenomenon that dn found during his 41 season of off-line play. Take a look.
