Michigans Upper Peninsula Fishing Report Feb 5,2009

Posted by David Domka on February 5, 2009

The entire state is ice fishing however; one cold front after another has kept catch rates low. Temperatures into the 40’s by the weekend should help get the bite going, but will also turn the snow into slush, which could make traveling across the ice a little more difficult

    UPPER PENINSULA

Portage Lake - A few nice walleyes were caught in 14 to 22 feet of water when jigging spoons with live minnows. Pike fishing in Chassel Bay has been spotty. One lucky angler caught a nice 42 inch pike on a tip-up with a large shiner in 19 feet of water. No panfish activity to report.

Keweenaw Bay - A few lake trout have been caught off Whirl-I-Gig Road, Jentoft’s Dock, and Old Mission. Coho and some lake herring were also caught however the bite was slow. Whitefish were taken in 80 to 105 feet of water when jigging a Swedish Pimple or when putting a single hook with spawn on the bottom. Good smelt fishing in 30 to 60 feet of water between Baraga and Bucks Marina. The perch bite was slow at this time.

Little Bay De Noc - Water clarity has been good and light snow has made for easier travel on the ice. Walleye anglers reported fewer catches but marked good numbers of fish from the mouth of the Escanaba River north to the Center Reef. The Center Reef has produced the most consistently for those jigging rapalas with minnows in 22 to 40 feet of water while those fishing from the Terrace Inn south to the Escanaba River reported fair action when jigging or using tip-ups in 22 to 35 feet of water. Catch rates for whitefish were up this week with the best reports around Sand Point in 80 feet of water. Those perch fishing near Kipling and Stonington reported few fish taken however those that caught fish were finding jumbo’s when jigging minnows in 20 to 30 feet of water. Northern pike were caught off the east bank in Kipling when using tip-ups with minnows in 10 to 17 feet of water.

Munuscong Bay - Walleye catches are good. Most fish are in 3 to 5 feet however the bigger fish can be found in deeper waters. Those targeting perch are jigging in Fowlers Bay.

Cedarville and Hessel - Musky Bay is producing lots of small perch along with a few fish measuring 10 inches or more. Try minnows, wigglers and wax worms in 10 to 14 feet of water. The Moscoe Channel and Little Joe Island are providing anglers with the opportunity to target northern pike. Catch rates were good but the fish were small.

Brevoort Lake - Is still producing some nice bluegills on the northwest end of the lake near the campground. Look for walleye along the east shoreline in the early morning or late evening.
