    Natural Resources Commission Votes to Expand Crossbow Hunting Opportunities

    Contact:  Mary Dettloff 517-335-3014
    Agency: Natural Resources

    March 6, 2009

    The Michigan Natural Resources Commission on Thursday approved a proposal to expand the use of crossbows for hunting in Michigan.

    Under the new regulations, crossbows may be used:

    • during any season in which a firearm may be used, for both big and small game;
    • for any hunting season in Zone 3 of southern Michigan;
    • by anyone 50 years of age or older during the Oct. 1-Nov. 14 deer season.

    Included in the regulations are limits on the velocity of the crossbow. Crossbows used for hunting are restricted to no more than 350 feet per second.

    The regulations have a three-year sunset. Crossbow hunters will be surveyed over the next three years and regulations will then be re-evaluated by the Department of Natural Resources. Data will be collected that analyzes impact on the resource and the crossbow’s potential to recruit or retain hunters. The data also will be analyzed to determine if crossbow use should be expanded further in the future.

    A crossbow stamp will be required in addition to hunting licenses for those using crossbows. Stamps will be available at all license retailers starting March 15.

    For more information on hunting opportunities in Michigan, visit the DNR’s Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnr.

    Feb. 3, 2009

    The Department of Natural Resources currently is accepting registration forms for Michigan’s third annual State Virtual Archery Tournament. The tournament, for students enrolled at schools participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP), will take place Feb. 16 through March 20, 2009. Final scores must be submitted to the DNR by March 23, 2009.

    Teams will be separated by grade level division (4-6, 7-8 and 9-12) and must be comprised of 16 to 24 students with at least five team members of the opposite gender. Schools unable to field a team will be permitted to register students to compete individually.

    Team and individual tournament champions will be awarded trophies, medals and other prizes thanks to the generous donations of several archery manufacturers and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

    First place and qualifying teams per age division and the highest scoring male and female archer will be invited to participate in the NASP National Tournament, which will be held May 8-9 in Louisville, Ky. Teams and individuals from 49 participating NASP states will be competing for college scholarships and other prizes.

    Michigan State Senator accuses DNR of cougar cover-up

    I was watching the new’s tonight and one of the top stories caught my attention, Once again in Michigan the issue of cougar’s are being brought up, the new’s was showing home videos from Lansing of two cougar’s walking a tree line,another video of a cougar walking through the woods in deep snow and alot of amature pics taken from all over the state of cougar’s in the wood’s,  countless evidence that cougars are roaming the woods in West Michigan have been brought to the public’s attention, but the DNR say’s they don’t exist. A State Senator is accusing the DNR of covering up the issue.  So as we are in the woods in West MI this spring and fall getting ready for the up coming hunting season’s, keep an eye out for sitting’s, eveidence, if you have trail cams and catch a big cat on them bring it up…the DNR can only cover it up so long.  Its going to take someone getting hurt or even killed by one before they will admit to having them and thats the sad part. So keep your eyes open..there’s proof, there around.
