Kentucky Disabled Vet Offering Hunts

I got an email from David Sullivan at BADF Disabled Services about an offer for disabled hunters.  Im not going to post the entire email because I dont wont to put the guys info out there but let me know if you are intrested.

Bill,  A disabled vet in a wheelchair himself, is offering an opportunity to hunt 200 acres of land near Burksville, KY either for archery or rifle.  Bill cannot provide a lot of assistance since he is disabled so you would have to bring a helper if needed.  This is a very generous offer on his part, please apply ONLY if you are seriously interested.  Hunters will be responsible for their own lodging, license and tags, food and transportation.  If you are seriously interested please……

Just let me know if you are disabled and intrested in hunting in Kentucky.  I will send you the rest of the email with the contact info and a questionare to fill out.

Registration open for annual Wheelin’ Sportsmen program

Outdoor enthusiasts with disabilities will have the opportunity to hunt deer, participate in various field activities, and create lasting memories and friendships this fall during a special deer hunting event for sportsmen with disabilities.

To be considered for participation in the event, interested hunters must submit their names and subsequent information no later than August 15. For registration information, contact Dave Dingey at 740-962-1205 or Brian Cox at 740-962-1215.

The seventh annual AEP Ohio Wheelin’ Sportsmen Ultimate Team-Up special deer hunt will be held on October 17 and 18 with the event activities at the Clarence E. Miller Armory while the participants will be hunting on land known as the AEP ReCreation Land near McConnelsville.

The “Ultimate Team-Up” is a program developed by the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). Participants do not have to be confined to wheelchairs and the event is open to applicants with any type of physically challenging disability. An experienced guide will offer whatever assistance might be needed in the field.

Sponsored by American Electric Power, NWTF Wheelin’ Sportsmen, NWTF Wolf Creek Chapter, and the Ohio Division of Wildlife, this award-winning event will host approximately 45 to 50 hunters.

Hunters in both events must meet necessary Ohio licensing requirements, but do not need to be experienced in deer hunting. Each hunter will be partnered with an experienced and capable hunting guide, which will make their hunting trip memorable, educational, and, hopefully, successful.

This special hunting event is designed to promote education, good health, character, sportsmanship, recreation, self-esteem, and disability awareness. Those interested in becoming a sponsor for these events can contact Dave Dingey at 740-962-1205.

The Friday evening dinner and activities will be open to the public, with the doors opening at 6 p.m. and dinner served at 6:30 p.m. There will also be live auction and silent auction tables. A $12 admission will help support the Wheelin’ Sportsmen program and the weekend event. Tickets may be purchased at the AEP office in McConnelsville by contacting Dave Dingey at 740-962-1205. The Saturday evening dinner will be closed to the public in 2008.

Note: Photo ID will be required upon entrance to the Armory anytime during the weekend.

“Once in a Lifetime Rifle Hunt” to benefit Catch a Dream

While sitting here on the computer I was trying to watch the Outdoor Channel between emails. Tonight I watched one of my favorite hunting shows “Wildlife Obsession” by Drury Outdoors. I really like their tips they give on food plots. And I’m amazed at the deer they put on the ground. Anyways at the end of the show I turned back to the computer here and as I clicked on my next email I heard one of the Drury guys talking about the Wildlife Obsession Sweepstakes and “Catch a Dream” and a raffle or something….. So I grabbed the remote to my Dish Network satellite and rewound it back to see what it was. They tell you to go their website for more info so I closed my email page and opened up the Druryoutdoors.com page.

I found the Drury news alert on the left side low on the home page about the Tara Wildlife Raffle to support Catch a Dream. There was no link on the Tara info so I went looking for the sweepstakes. I went up and clicked to the Wildlife Obsession page. They (Drury Outdoors’ Wildlife Obsession) have a sweepstakes going on with a ton of prizes. So go check them out if you want in on the action. Oh did I mention they have weekly prizes also!! So after signing up I went back looking for the Catch a Dream raffle. I went back to the home page and I scrolled down to see about the Tara Raffle. I didn’t see a link so typed Tara Wildlife in the Google search bar which lead me to what I was looking for.

Tara is one the nation’s ultimate destinations for deer, and turkey hunting.  They have three beautiful properties that are now bow hunting only for deer. But the raffle is for a special “Once in a Lifetime Rifle Hunt”

Tara Wildlife has organized a raffle to help raise money for Catch-A-Dream.   You can purchase your ticket from Tara Wildlife and be entered to win a “Once in a Lifetime RIFLE Hunt.”  Tickets are going fast, so get yours today and help support Catch-A-Dream!

Another Great Year for Wheelin’ Sportsmen Ultimate Turkey Hunt

News from the Roost

JACKSON, S.C. — Turkey talk, good food and lots of laughs were the order of the day at the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Wheelin’ Sportsmen Ultimate Turkey Hunt, held at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in Jackson, S.C., April 18 to April 19.

The hunt, put on as part of the NWTF’s Wheelin’ Sportsmen outreach program, has been helping hunters with disabilities enjoy wild turkey hunting at SRS since 2004. This year, 27 hunters teamed up with SRS employees and harvested a total of 17 gobblers on a sunny Saturday morning.

“I really look forward to this every spring,” said David Cianfarano, a disabled veteran from Fountain Inn, S.C. “If it wasn’t for the NWTF and their Wheelin’ Sportsmen program, I wouldn’t be out here today enjoying myself, and wouldn’t have been able to experience the thrill of getting this gobbler,” Cianfarano said. “I’ve been here every year for five years, and I definitely don’t plan on missing next year.”

An appreciation dinner was held Friday night before the hunt, and included a silent auction and shotgun raffle to raise money for the Wheelin’ Sportsmen NWTF program. For uncle and nephew team Jack and James Laughridge from Anderson, S.C., luck was certainly in their favor. James won the raffle on a new Benelli shotgun Friday night, and uncle Jack bagged a nice bird the next morning.

“Awesome, awesome weekend!” said James, high-fiving his uncle on the way back to the truck.

NWTF Wheelin’ Sportsmen Assistant National Coordinator Illana Burkhart thanked everyone involved in the hunt, including the U.S. Department of Energy- Savannah River Operations Office, the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Wackenhut Services, Inc., Washington Savannah River Company, the Aiken County NWTF Chapter and the Aiken Sertoma Club.

“The SRS staff is great to work with, and the local chapter members always invest tons of time and work into the event,” said Burkhart. “This isn’t work for me. We love coming back to SRS to help give local mobility-impaired hunters another opportunity to enjoy the the outdoors.”

Wheelin’ Sportsmen NWTF provides all people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors through local chapter events nationwide. The program also provides a full-color, quarterly magazine to its members. Wheelin’ Sportsmen magazine is dedicated to the education and entertainment of outdoors enthusiasts with disabilities.

Whether it is shooting, hunting, fishing or archery, there is no limit to the outdoor opportunities Wheelin’ Sportsmen NWTF can bring to a person with disabilities who’s eager to get outside and participate in an active lifestyle.

For Disabled Hunters, Sport Goes On

New York Times

For Disabled Hunters, Sport Goes On

Published: February 17, 2008

Bill Baker prepared to hunt from a hydraulic blind suited to his wheelchair.

Laura Pedrick for The New York Times

SEVEN years ago, Bill Baker was hunting deer using a tree stand, a platform perched in branches 10 feet above the ground, when he fell and was paralyzed from the chest down.

Mr. Baker, of Hamilton, N.J., said his priority was getting back to normal. And part of that was going hunting again.

“Everybody says, ‘Why would you go back,’ but I have to — it’s in my blood,” Mr. Baker said recently at the Heron Glen Golf Course in Hunterdon County at a deer hunt organized for disabled people.

The public golf course is overpopulated with deer, which damage trees and grounds, so while the course was closed for the season last month, the county set aside three days to allow the disabled hunters group to hold the hunt, said Craig Evans, supervising county park ranger.

The course has paved golf cart trails, permitting park rangers to drive the hunters into the course’s 5,500 acres.

“It’s a perfect matchup,” Mr. Evans said.

Himself a hunter, Mr. Evans knows about the needs of disabled hunters because of his familiarity with the Wheelin’ Sportsmen, an outreach program of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Last year, Mr. Evans worked with Gerald McCusker, the president of a chapter of the turkey group in Phillipsburg, to organize the first hunt at the course. A dozen people participated in that one, netting six deer. The group pays for the hunts.

At this year’s hunt, which had 17 participants, Mr. Baker and the others readied themselves for the outing, eating homemade elk chili and telling hunting stories.

Mr. Baker, who can use his arms but not his fingers, explained how he hunts: He rests his shotgun on a swinging rod with a Y-shaped top that connects to his wheelchair’s footrest. A companion tapes his finger to a piece of metal that is hooked around the trigger.

“You learn to adapt,” he said.  Read More:

Dream hunts and disabled hunting pages added to blog

New pages were added for listing organizations that provide dream hunts for people with disabilities or life-threatening illnesses and disabled hunting information.   Hopefully we can point folks to a group that best fits their needs.  Normally a group will post or request a hunt that an applicant has asked for, or they post about adaptive equipment.  The groups try the best they can but they need support from the landowners, guides, sponsers and volunteers in order to make these hunt dreams come true.  So let me know if we need to add any groups or the information needs updating.
