Disaboom

I was contacted by someone at Disaboom about helping to bring disabled outdoor sports information to more people.  So I checked out www.disaboom.com to find out that they are one of the largest online communities for people touched by disabilities.  Yall need to check them out.  They have tons of info on their website. Everthing you can think of when it comes to disabilities.  The web site is broken into four main sections which are health, living, community, and marketplace.  The site is growing everyday so bookmark it and check often for new links and information.  Disaboom has employees who love the outdoors so make sure you check out the Sports and Recreation link in the Living section.

I hope I can help anyone in need of hunting with disablities information.  Stay tuned in as we work together and help those in need of a little assistance from their fellow hunters.

When I have more time to explore, I’ll report back on any and everything outdoor related.

Hunting season is here, but where am I?

It appears Im stuck in a time warp or something because hunting season is here but Im no where near it.  Since my dad passed a few weeks ago, I have spent nearly every day at his house packing and trashing all his junk that he has amassed over the years.Well toady we neared the end of going through everything and emptied out the sheds.  Does the name Samford and Son mean anything to you?

Now Im tasked with the disassembly of the pool.  Unfortunatly, I have to put it back together like it supposed to be……   Its a nice pool and all but I may have to hurt somebody before this is over with.

I’ll be heading back over in the morning to finish up hauling anything back to my house .  Thats why the blog posting has been slow these last few weeks.  I dont get home till late and Im to wiped out to do any computer work.  Its all I can do just to check emails.  We are all wiped out and when we get back to normal we will probly sleep for a week.

If yall get to the woods and fields this week, be careful and good luck.

Mike Bell

Buckmasters Life Hunt auction for charity

I am passing this information along in case you know of anyone who would like to bid on this hunt for the purpose of raising money for BADF.  This is not intended to be one of our typical offerings for our disabled and ill hunters, but for a fundraiser.  The hunt is listed on eBay under item number 180280736274.

This hunt is for someone to be able to witness the 2009 Buckmasters Life Hunt Classic while getting to hunt some themselves.  If anyone with a disability is interested in bidding on the hunt I would like for them to contact me first.  We are somewhat limited as to the type disabilities that we can accommodate.

The ‘Hunt with Buckmasters for Charity’ auction is at www.ebay.com under item number 180280736274

Thanks and God bless,

Grant Program Assists Food Pantry Donations

COLUMBUS, OHIO -The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife has collaborated with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) in an effort to assist with the processing costs associated with donating venison to a food bank.

A $100,000 subsidy grant has been awarded to FHFH to help pay the processing fee on donated venison. The grant money is being provided in two $50,000 allotments that are to be matched with funds generated or collected by FHFH. The Division is subsidizing this year’s FHFH operation as an additional deer management tool, helping wildlife managers encourage hunters to kill more does.

“In establishing a dedicated fund, the division hopes to provide hunters with an option to donate excess venison to food banks throughout Ohio,” stated James Marshall, assistant chief of the Division of Wildlife. “By providing hunters with an affordable outlet for donating extra venison, the division hopes to ultimately encourage hunters to kill more does.”

Finding ways to kill more does will help wildlife managers keep Ohio’s deer population management plan on track. Deer hunters can again buy additional antlerless deer permits at reduced prices for the 2008-09 deer-hunting season. Cost of the antlerless deer permit remains at $15.

FHFH began in Maryland in 1997 after founder Rick Wilson encountered a woman along a Virginia highway looking for help loading a road-killed deer into her car to feed her children. Inspired to give hunters the opportunity to help feed the hungry, Wilson formed a program that would raise money to pay the butchering bills for hunters that donate deer.

Now over a decade old, FHFH has grown to include 120 local coordinators in 26 different states. Annual meat donation totals have topped 300,000 pounds-enough to provide meat for over 1.2 million meals-and are expected to increase even further in the coming years.

“Our partnership with Ohio is an exciting opportunity to jump-start our work in the state. We’ve always had strong interest in Ohio with regard to the number of FHFH coordinators that have signed on to work with us. Now we have this financial support from the Division of Wildlife to help us build on that foundation,” said Josh Wilson, FHFH operations director.

Anyone interested in becoming a local FHFH coordinator or a participating meat processor should visit the “Local FHFH” page at www.fhfh.org. The current list of coordinators along with their program names and the counties they are serving can be found there.

Venison that is donated to food banks must be processed by a state inspected and insured meat processor that is participating with FHFH. Hunters wishing to donate their deer to a food bank are not required to pay for the processing of the venison as long as the program has funds available to cover the cost. The grant from the Division of Wildlife to FHFH is intended to help with the costs of venison processing.

Al Bell: A million years ago last month

Well the last month seems to be a million years ago but we are starting to get back into a normal schedule.

On July 15 my dad lost the feeling in his legs and went back into the hospital. He had a tumor pressing against his spinal cord. They cut it out but could not get all of it because they didnt want to damage the spinal cord. the plan was to let the swelling go down and go back in with the lazer knife to get the rest of it. While waiting for the swelling to go down they took the drain line out. Then he got a staff infection. So a week later after antibodies and all he had enough feeling in his legs to walk 128 steps down the hall. the next day he could only walk 32 steps and that was the last time he walked. He had pain in his back but no feelings in his feet again. Nurse found a bulge in his stomach when checking him out that night. Since it was below the area in his back he could not feel it. The next morning they did MRI and Cat scans. That night was Tuesday and thats when when got the news. Doctors said at the moment it was inoperable and everything was up to my dad. The bulge in his stomach was another tumor and there was more. The tumor on his back near the spinal cord had come back in two weeks time. They told him to make sure his affairs were in order and to have his family come and visit.  How long was up to him……

Well I guess he had enough because he left us a week later on Aug 12.

During that week, we talked about hunting memories mostly. I tried to ask questions and all about his affairs and if there were any instructions I need to follow, but he would not have any of it.

My feelings change every minute all day long. Good memories make me smile then cry….. Then I wonder how my kids are going deal with out him being there. Then I think of my daughter getting her first deer and him not being there…Then I wonder about my sister cause she always relied on him to help her out… Then Im glad he is not hurting cause thats whats got to me the most was seeing him in pain and not being able to do things.

Alot of people have shown us how much he ment to them also. That in its self helped me realize how good of a man my dad was. He was respected by everybody that met him because he respected people. He life was spent serving others. He was in the Air Force, almost thirty years as a police officer and trainer. and the last eight years he was a Magistrate Judge. He was always willing to help others. I guess thats where I get it from. I want to help my fellow hunters any way I can. Which is why I have been assiciated with Hunters Helping Hunters since 2001. Hunters were needing more help then HHH could give them so I decide to start the Help Central List to give those in need the information to get that help. Skinny Moose Media has allowed me to start the Help4Hunters.com blog so that I can get that message out to those looking for help.

I will continue my dad’s willingness to help others in my own effort to help my fellow hunters. Time heal all wounds….. or something like that. As we settle back into a place of normalacy I will be bloggin full force to help all those I can.

Later yall,

Be Adaptive Equipment LLC - new for 2008

be Adaptive BT 100
NEW FOR 08   Model BT100
Be Adaptive’s new bite trigger works basically the same as their electric models.
The mouth piece mounts to a gun with Velcro straps and by biting down on it operates the trigger on the gun.  This provides shooters with more ”feel” during the trigger pull.  A better feel means better accuracy, weither by mouth or fingers.

The BT100 easily attaches to guns trigger guard with mounting screws.  Be Adaptive has extra mounting plates available if you want to have

multiple guns ready.  I would reccommend practicing alot with a rim fire 22 caliber rifle long before any hunting season starts.  Then when time comes for the center fire season, an easy swaping of the trigger should be easy and quick.
