    CWD CONFIRMED IN MICHIGAN

    PRESS RELEASE

    For Immediate Release

LANSING – The Michigan departments of Agriculture (MDA) and Natural Resources (DNR) today confirmed the states first case of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in a three-year old white-tailed deer from a privately owned cervid (POC) facility in Kent County.

The state has quarantined all POC facilities, prohibiting the movement of all – dead or alive – privately-owned deer, elk or moose. Officials do not yet know how the deer may have contracted the disease. To date, there is no evidence that CWD presents a risk to humans.

DNR and MDA staff are currently reviewing records from the Kent County facility and five others to trace deer that have been purchased, sold or moved by the owners in the last five years for deer and the last seven years for elk. Any deer that may have come in contact with the CWD-positive herd have been traced to their current location and those facilities have been quarantined.

Michigans veterinarians and wildlife experts have been working throughout the weekend to complete their investigation, said Don Koivisto, MDA director. We take this disease very seriously, and are using every resource available to us to implement response measures and stop the spread of this disease.

CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk and moose. Most cases of the disease have been in western states, but in the past several years, it has spread to some midwestern and eastern states. Infected animals display abnormal behaviors, progressive weight loss and physical debilitation.

Current evidence suggests that the disease is transmitted through infectious, self-multiplying proteins (prions) contained in saliva and other fluids of infected animals. Susceptible animals can acquire CWD by direct exposure to these fluids or also from contaminated environments. Once contaminated, research suggests that soil can remain a source of infection for long periods of time, making CWD a particularly difficult disease to eradicate.

Michigans First Case of Chronic Wasting Disease Detected at Kent County Deer Breeding Facility: Currently, one of our top concerns is to confirm that the disease is not in free-ranging deer, said DNR Director Rebecca Humphries. We are asking hunters this fall to assist us by visiting check stations to allow us to take biological samples from the deer they harvest, so we can perform adequate surveillance of the free-ranging white-tailed deer herd in the area.

Deer hunters this fall who take deer from Tyrone, Solon, Nelson, Sparta, Algoma, Courtland, Alpine, Plainfield, and Cannon townships will be required to bring their deer to a DNR check station. Deer taken in these townships are subject to mandatory deer check.

The DNR is also asking hunters who are participating in the private land five-day antlerless hunt in September in other parts of Kent County to visit DNR check stations in Kent County so further biological samples can be taken from free-ranging deer for testing. The DNR is in the process of finding additional locations for check stations in Kent County to make it more convenient for hunters.

The deer that tested positive at the Kent County facility was a doe that had been recently culled by the owner of the facility. Michigan law requires sick deer or culled deer on a POC facility be tested for disease. The samples from the Kent County deer tested suspect positive last week at Michigan State University Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health, and were sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa last Thursday for confirmatory testing. The positive results of those tests were communicated to the state of Michigan today.

Audits of the facility by the DNR in 2004 and 2007 showed no escapes of animals from the Kent County facility were reported by the owner. Also, there were no violations of regulations recorded during the audits.

Since 2002, the DNR has tested 248 wild deer in Kent County for CWD. In summer 2005, a number of those deer had displayed neurological symptoms similar to CWD; however, after testing it was determined the deer had contracted Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

More information on CWD is available on Michigans Emerging Diseases Web site at www.michigan.gov/chronicwastingdisease.

    UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR

Columbus Ohio – From WBNS 10TV News in Columbus, continued reports are being made from homeowners that more of their pets have become the target of what looks to be a crossbow shooter.

The Capital Area Humane Society is now advising homeowners not to leave their pets unsupervised, even in their own backyards.

“What kind of person would do something like that?” neighbor Bonnie Cramer asked, “Obviously this is a very disturbed individual.”

At this time two cats have been shot and survived earlier this year, but now dogs seem to be the new target. Both dogs that have been reported shot have deceased.

    (Photo WBNS10TV News)

I personally am outraged that anyone could take aim to anyones pet let alone think that this is an acceptable way to behave.

I am a hunter, and believe in the harvesting of animals within the guidelines of the state laws, and doing so humanely. Anyone out there who practices this kind of behavior with pets or any other animal not within the guidelines of state season and law should be punished in ways I cant even express with words.

This not only makes me ashamed for the way mankind has grown more barbaric in the way we treat the animals of our planet, but I am saddened that the weapon of choice in this story is a crossbow. I feel that this behavior gives the hunters of our area an image of carelessness and irresponsiblity.

I know that this is a small percentage of the population, but in hearing these stories I cant believe that these kind of people still exist and can sleep at night.

THE BIGFOOT HOAX – ADD YOUR VIEWS !

With the trail camera boom in the last 5-10 years, and all the hunters in the woods since the days of the native american hunter, I am simply not surprised that another hoax has to be documented under the Bigfoot category. We havent captured him yet, to my knowledge, with the Cuddeback… so he cant be real, can he?! With all the technology in the woods and hunters alike…and I am not saying that I dont believe, because I am open to idea that anything is possible… but my goodness another ape suit ? Its sad that another “fake finding” has to discredit all the true believers and Bigfoot hunters/researchers out there. These people do believe, work hard and document findings…honestly and scientifically. What a shame for the true Bigfoot believer and hunter…that someone looking for some short-lived attention has made their passion look like a joke.

    GEORGIA BIGFOOT HOAX

The most recent Bigfoot discovery has been found to be a hoax. As the creature began to unthawl from being preserved in a freezer, it become evident he was not a true Bigfoot, as claims made him to be.For the believers and nonbelievers alike, this new discovery from Matt Whitton and Rick Dyer of Georgia seemed to good to be true. From the beginning, these two men running a Bigfoot website, claimed to have found the body of a deceased bigfoot and had the remains locked in a freezer. As with any bigfoot discovery, interest was high. Claims were made and minimal pictures were released to be viewed. But where the trouble began for the two men was with their website. On their site you could view addition pictures for a two dollar fee.

Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) who internationally search for Bigfoot and investigate findings wish to push to prosecute these men for fraud. Currently it is not a crime for the claim and hoax, but this may be looked into further due to the website gaining a small fortune over the sale of the addition pictures at two dollars a pop.

Her Outdoors will keep you posted on more events on this story as it unfolds.

THE WILD TURKEY VS THE OHIO STATE PATROL

We have all been there at one time or another, and you know exactly what I mean. This is for those who have pulled themselves out of bed before the sun was to rise, and spent the entire day waiting on that gobble…just to get back the car, frustrated, because you have had no luck in the woods. You finally decide to head home, when you almost run a gobbler down with the front bumper of your car. Take a few minutes and enjoy this footage from OSP. I know its not turkey season in the footage, but I can not tell you how many afternoons I left a silent woods only to find more action on the Ohio roadways or in the town parking lots. Go figure.
