I have so many different reasons on why I choose to hunt.

Believe it or not, I am one of the biggest animal lovers you will ever meet, so it usually doesn’t make sense to people when I tell them I am a hunter.

In the beginning, I began going out and sitting in the woods just to watch the wildlife. My love of animals got me out there with my camera. I did this for a year or so…just taking my camera out to snap a few shots of life in the woods.

( Fall Buck, picture taken by Sarrah Knapp, 2004)

A place to be alone, sit in silence and watch nature. I became a fixture under any given tree. As I began to notice more species of animals, trees and plants, I became interested in the conservation of the outdoors… keeping nature beautiful and clean for my new outdoor animal friends. I began to notice more litter around and pick it up, care about recycling and how others treated the animals of the land we all belonged to. In researching and learning about conservation and what part I could play to keep everything more clean and natural in a world that looked to me like it was spiraling downhill, I began to understand what hunting was all about.

Everyone always asks if I love animals so much, why I hunt. To be honest, I thought it was mean and heartless to go out and harm or kill anything. And still to this day I believe it is if one is not properly outfitted, trained and respectful to the proper kill shots on their animals.

As I started out, I became a part of many organizations in my area who taught and encouraged wildlife management. I quickly learned that while humans were overpopulating the earth with just our presence and trash that these animals were running out of food and places to live. They would suffer from starvation with their growing numbers and lessening of crop for feeding. I began to realize what was behind the state hunting and fishing seasons. They were not just set up for the fun of hunting and killing, but in managed seasons and hunts; that taking a few animals a year was best for the herd or any animal group.

I have seen starving deer, numerous auto verses animal deaths and farm crop destroyed by overpopulated animal groups which feeds all of us at our local supermarkets. I began to see what these groups were talking about.

If I was disciplined in practice and was confident in my shooting skills, I could make clean kill shots keeping pain and suffering for my animal to a minimum and help balance the ecosystem at the same time. I then began to understand that hunting for the right reasons, and doing it in the respectful way was better for all of us… animals and humans.

And so it began. In dating my boyfriend, I started to notice all of the excitement hunting had to offer. From fish, ducks, deer to turkey, an entire new way of living was unfolding in front of me.

Everything was so new to me and I did not know a thing! But behind most men, and like my boyfriend at the time…they were out there for the same reasons as I was…and the passion ran deep. The love of nature, the silence and stillness, just to name a few. All I had to do was ask, and my teacher was there. So there it began, my life in the outdoors.

I eagerly began to tag along, just observing on the hunts. Soon after, with my knowledge of the wildlife management goals set aside for the seasons, I had been learning through the group events…I found the confidence and courage to go out on my first hunt.

I respected the reason on why I was out there, not just to kill but to learn, appreciate and watch. I was ready.

That year, I took my first spring turkey. Not only did I appreciate the meat he provided with, I was thankful for the life lessons my recent hunt had enlightened my spirit to. I learned about myself. I found an inner peace and silence I had found nowhere else.

It has never been, or will ever be about going out just to kill something. Yes, there will be fun and laughs but when a kill is made, there is so much more than that celebration I am feeling inside.

I will say my prayers over my harvest and I will continue to take the time to show the upmost appreciation to whatever animal I am fortunate to cross paths with. I will never stop thanking each animal for his donation to my own spirit and for the meat he has provided for myself, my family and my friends.

So when anyone asks why I hunt… it may take me over an hour to explain but it’s not just to get out there with all the trendy camo, guns and bows and blow something away. To me it is one of the best ways I can learn about myself, appreciate the animals of the land around me, and contribute in any way I can to the wildlife management goals of my area.

The holidays are always a time of family and celebration…one of togetherness and thankfulness for what we have in health, life and love. I have been fortunate to have had many holidays where nothing has taken the focus off the holiday decorations, cookies and the laughter of family throughout every room. However, this week a beloved family member has passed. This will be a huge void that will not be filled throughout the holidays for the family, but we do understand that our loved one is now in a better place to enjoy in much bigger celebrations.

In all the laughter and celebration over the holidays, don’t forget to look around and notice the missing members of your family…ones who have passed, or ones not able to make the trip to spend time together for whatever reason. Awknowledge the missing, and do not forget to notice your loved ones who may be saddened that another member is not present beside them as the laughter throughout the night lingers on. Years may have passed since a family members passing, but at these sacred family events, someone is always missing someone not there to join in.

Take the time to notice those who are smiling but missing someone inside.

Enjoy your holidays, HER OUTDOORS

Not only do I take it with me up in the trees, I took it as my carry-on bag for my 2 day trip to Florida through the airport with all my belongings as a personal bag. That has to say something for it’s versatility!” HER OUTDOORS

“On the morning of Sept 16th 2008, my husband and I threw up a ladder stand in the corner of our woods because we had seen two monster bucks feeding out in the field the night before. That same night, we just get settled in and immediately we had does and some small bucks all around us and that’s when I spotted movement in the cornfield. Heading directly for me where a huge 10 point buck and this monster!! They got within 15 yards of my stand when a deer directly under my husband’s stand started to snort. This put the two monster bucks at alert. In order to pull off the shot, I had to move my feet so I would be able to square my body for the shot. With the bucks that close, I believe, the only reason I didn’t get picked out was because I was using your Backpack Blind. The blind covered the lower part of my body, allowing me to move without being seen and I was able to harvest a buck of a lifetime!!!! This Wisconsin bruiser has 22 points with a 10 1/2 inch drop tine! I truly want to thank you from the bottom of my heart because I truly believe without that extra coverage, the bucks would’ve seen me move, and I would’ve lost my chance at harvesting a world class buck, so again THANK YOU!!!” Tara Seiler- Droptine Divas

Sportsmen’s Outdoor Strategies

“If I inspire just one little girl, then it’s totally worth it for me.” Laura Kristi

Being a female new to hunting, I am always wishing for more women to be featured on the screen. Finally, a female with the passion so many of us share for hunting will be featured on one of the outdoor industry’s most popular hunting shows. Laura Kristi is a girl you are sure to want to follow co-hosting the hit show Sportsmens Outdoor Strategies. SOS TV is comprised of many greats. Hosting with two of the most well respected outdoorsmen in the industry today, Bob Walker and Paul Butski, adding Laura to the mix was nothing short of a brillant addition to the show.

So many female hunters are begging the industry to feature the women of the sport, and to have one represented on this show with such enthusiasm is something I cant wait to watch. Being a female hunter, I often flip through the shows wondering when the ladies will be featured to follow and learn from them. Finally a show has come along with the insight to give us someone with the excitement of a beginner and a passion we all share for the outdoors. This is not just a gentlemen’s sport anymore!

Laura is a beginner and is eager to tell the story that everyone has to start somewhere. The industry is comprised of so many hunters who seem to know everything inside and out, and have been there and done that. Laura is excited to show a different side to the hunt, one some of us have just begun…or one where we need some encouragement to keep going on those frustrating days. “I am very much a beginner, I’m learning along with alot of other people in this world how to hunt. Lucky for me I’m learning from the best, but I’m so many emotions. I’m anxious, I’m nervous, I’m so excited…but most of all I can’t wait to just get out there and show people, more or less women and children, that it’s something everyone can do. It’s not just for the guys anymore.”

Laura is no stranger to the screen, and with so much history and success in front of the camera, she is one to get excited about watching as she takes to the woods to learn the ins-and-outs of having that hunting passion we all know so much about. Being new to hunting, SOS TV will be featuring Laura taking the Hunters Safety Course, learning the art of shooting guns, bows and everything else hunting encompasses. There is so much out there to learn, and to be able to follow some of the industry greats while watching Laura learn and grow as we all are, is sure to be something to set this show apart from the rest!

Laura grew up in Colorado, and along side her brother Jerry, spent days four-wheeling and fishing. Laura eventually turned down numerous volleyball schlorships to pursue her dream to be on television. Graduating from Colorado State University with a BA in Communications, it took Laura no time to land numerous jobs on air while balancing a modeling career. Many successful jobs later, Laura was contacted by non other than Bob Walker of SOS TV and creator of Walker’s Game Ear ( www.walkersgameear.com .) With the support and encouragement of co-host and expert turkey caller Paul Butski, Laura was asked to co-host along side the men, and be given the once in a lifetime opportunity to learn to hunt, on air, with some of the most respected and talented hunters of our time.

Of course Laura immediately jumped on board and the rest is history! Wanting to encourage and promote the women and children of hunting and the outdoors, Laura is able to pursue many of her dreams all at once…and share them with us.

As said before, Laura is new to hunting like many women and children are. This is going to be a great opportunity for viewers to learn from the beginning how to enter into what we sometimes feel is an “overwhelming adventure.” Laura begins her time on SOS TV with completing the Hunter Safety Course. We will be able to follow Laura through her moments of learning everything from weapons to calls, to studying wildlife and taking her first harvests. Isn’t this what it’s all about anyway, joining others in their excitement in the pursuit of a harvest?

In talking with Laura, it is easy to remember some of my first experiences in the outdoors…how breathtaking so many of the experiences have been and how precious time with family and friends have been over the years. It’s exciting to see a woman about to embark on a journey were I have recently been, and love to remember when stories are shared. This is something I can’t wait to see her experience on screen.

Laura is one of the most passionate women I have met, especially in this business. Not only is she thrilled to have this opportunity to hunt, she values and respects all the aspects of the hunt, and the help that is going to take her on her journey outdoors.

In the 2008 season Laura will be taking her Hunters Safety Course, training, and learning everything she can learn about the hunt, so by 2009 she will be out there for all of us to see and learn with. “By the ‘09 season I’ll actually be on the hunt with the guys,” something Laura can’t wait to begin. “Bob (Walker) already told me we are going to be going to every part of the country, we are going to be hunting every animal you can imagine.”

Nothing but pure excitement comes continuously flying out of Laura as she tells of her future plans. Not only is she eager to get out there, I am just as eager to follow along with her as her future in the woods is about to be born and nurtured on screen. A perfect choice has been made for the women and children who have a love for the outdoors. Laura is going to be an amazing representation of the new hunters out there, most importantly the women.
