New Baseball fans

For those of you who don’t know me I am a Phillies fan.  Well really a Philly fan, any sport I will take my team against yours.  Citizens Bank Park is a newer stadium, I think this is the 3rd year they have played there.  And a new stadium draws a different crowd, a younger, more interested in having a good time then the actual game.

This seems to be the new trend, younger college kids coming out to have some beers and dogs and socializing then seeing a game.  I am sure many of you have been to the cookie cutter stadiums of the 70’s and realize what dumps they were.  But those dumps hold a special place in our hearts.  I loved the 700 level at the Vet, for Phillies games you could pay $5 and sit wherever you wanted to in the 700 level.  People who went to the Vet were fans to see their team play.  With these new ball parks you get people who are there to party and a baseball game breaks out.

Does this make my fanhood different then someone elses?  Am I more of a fan because I go to the game and fill out the scorecard?  I think so, but I think I am the last of my kind.  It is weird saying the last of my kind and I am only 28.  I think I am the last of my kind to sit and wonder who is available to pitch the 7th, will we bring our closer in in the 9th even though it is not a save situation to get him some work?

I am sure the owners love the new fans, they drink, eat, and buy jerseys.  When did a baseball game start to need crab cakes?  Sushi?  Pizza?  Water ice?

Give me a beer, a dog, a scorecard, and pencil.  Thats all I need.

How to ration your water

Ok your stuck somewhere with only a limited amount of water and you can’t find any.

Day 1: NO WATER, that is right, no water. Your body has enough in storage for one day.

Day 2-4: 14oz if available is all you need.

Day 5+: 8oz is what you should have. At this point you are in real trouble and you should make all attempts to find water or help.

When drinking moisten the lips, tongue and throat before swallowing.

When you have a limited amount of water you should not eat. If you must eat stay away from protein, no fish, seaweed, or meat. They require a lot of water to digest. Try to stick to sugars and carbs, they will be easier to digest.

Stuck in the woods? Eat Bugs.

So you find yourself stuck in the woods, eat bugs. With just a little knowledge you will know what you can and can not eat. All most anywhere on earth you will find bugs, while different with just knowing the basics you can survive.

Pound for pound insects have the most nutrition anywhere. Most insects are edible raw and usually more nutritious that way but they are more palatable cooked. Boiled is the best way to cook the little guys, it destroys harmful bacteria and parasites. Roasting is the easiest way to cook your bounty, just put them on a rock and place them close to the fire.

Termites are easy to find and pretty safe, just take off the wings and cook. Bees and wasps are all edible. Ants are edible, however; they all need to be cooked for at least 6 minutes to destroy any poison. Locusts/cricket/grasshoppers are big and a great source of food. They can be eaten raw, but toasted they make a great treat. So I have heard.

DO NOT gather insects feeding on dung or refuse, they are likely to carry infection. DO NOT eat brightly coloured insects (including caterpillars) they are likely poisonous. DO NOT eat grubs found the on the underside of leaves they most likely secrete poisonous fluids. DO NOT go near large bettles, they have powerful jaws and can bite and pinch.

Now with everything I listed in the DO NOT paragraph they can all be used as bait, just put a hook in them and get yourself a fish. Remember to wash your hands after you handle these critters. Just remember to gut your fish to remove the insects.

This could come in handy if you are ever trapped in the trunk of your car, just find the wires going to the brake lights and your rescued. Also if you are trapped in the middle of nowhere you can find some telephone wires and tap out your message. But if your trapped in the middle of nowhere and find wires, just cut them. Someone will come out to find out why the lights/phone/cable went out.

Thank you Jimmy Bedford

Ok most of you are saying, “Who the hell is Jimmy Bedford?” Well, most of you have tasted his product for the last 40 years. He has caused you some great nights, some lousy mornings, and gotten some of us women we may not have gotten otherwise.

I received my newsletter from Jack Daniels this week to inform me that Jimmy Bedford will be retiring this week. Ok big deal right? Well Mr. Bedford has been the Master Distiller for 20 years and he worked 20 years before that for Jack Daniels. Jack Daniels has only had 7 Master Distillers since 1866 and Mr. Bedford is the 6th. That is saying something, stability is why Jack Daniels turns out a great product. If you wish to thank Mr. Bedford you can contact him at:

If you were curious who the new Master Distiller is, well it is Jeff Arnett. He has been with JD since 2001 and was most recently Manager of Quality Control and whiskey maturation.

Beer it’s what’s good for you.

So your drinking may cause concern for some in your family. Think about it, were you healthier in your 20’s or 40’s? Do you think time made you less healthier? You don’t think the massive amount of beer you drank in college helped. Well recent studies show that 2 beers a day will lower your chances of stroke and heart disease. However only drinking 1 beer a day or 1 a week were shown to have no difference in your chances of getting one of these diseases. So drink up!

Beer also increases the amount of good cholesterol (HDL) in your system, which helps keep you from getting blood clots.

Beer is fat-free and cholesterol free.

So you can go to the gym if you want, but I am popping the top on a frosty cold one. Ok, Ok, Ok, if you are a health nut take a Flintstone’s chewable and chase it with a beer.

I think Ben Franklin said it best when he said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy”.

Lets get healthy!

Welcome to the Men’s Corner

I have been interested in writing a blog for a while and finally got the chance.  I will be hitting on topics I know; beer/sports/fishing/how to/survival techniques/grilling and whatever pops up along the way.  I brew beer in a Mr. Beer, but I do a lot of reading about beer and know a good amount about this beverage.  I follow MLB, NHL, NFL, and some NBA, I don’t know everything but more then most I would like to think.  I fish fresh and saltwater, I have done some fishing in Mexico and enjoy the topic.  As far as how too, ever wonder how to tie a rabbit snare?  Start a fire with a flint stick?  How to pour a perfect beer, what glass to use?  Whiskey?  I enjoy learning something once an awhile, so I will pass on what I learn.

Basically I will pass on stuff Men should know, will it make you a genius on any topic?  No, but hopefully it will make you know enough to not look like an idiot.

By no means am I always right, prove me wrong if know better.  Got an idea or topic you want to learn about?  Well get in touch with me.

Ohh by the way, the name is Pace.
