“If there is an arrow in the air there is hope” Originally posted 4/06
The above quote is one of many great ones from Steve Bartkowski who presented this evening at a Big Game Dinner I attended at the First Baptist Church of Garner. As some of you know I was wondering if this was some type of April Fools Day trick because other then a sign there was no other information available. Well it was not an elaborate trick being played on me but a very enjoyable evening with a bunch of guys who not only love the outdoors but also love the Creator who made it for us to enjoy.
The food was phenomenal and some of the best wild game I’ve ever had. Of course the whitetail was the main feature, burgers, grilled, jerked, teriyaki, etc. There was also some elk dishes that were great.
Steve told us about his years in the NFL and how at one of the highest points in his life someone shared that God had a plan for his life. He was not ready for that message at that point in his life but 3 years latter when he failed at football and lost his starting position with the Falcons that plan of salvation he had heard came flooding back to him and he accepted Christ.
Steve shared a lot about what it was like to play in the NFL and how after the NFL he started doing outdoor television shows. Currently he works for a company taking their clients out hunting, fishing, and golfing. When asked about his favorite type of hunting he said “Elk hunting, it’s like chasing a 900lb turkey” His favorite place to hunt is Montana he hopes to live there one day. He said that a real sleeper area right now for hunting is in the SW corner of the state “Ruby River area” its like the “Milk River area 15 or so years ago before it was so popular”.
He shared a little about preserving the sport and getting the youth involved. He talked about how his dad invested time in him to help him achieve what he had in his life and how he had done the same with his boys. When talking about youth Steve said “No Dreams to big just hope to small”. All of us need to help the youth especially those in single parent families that may not get the opportunities to experience the outdoors.
It was a wonderful evening, attendance was light there were only about 35 people there, and they plan to do more dinners in the future. Hopefully next time I’ll have a bit more information so we can fill the place up.
