My friend Jody shooting 3d at the 2003 Dixie Deer Classic

     The Dixie Deer Classic opens the doors tomorrow on the 26th annual show, by many this is considered to be the granddaddy of all outdoor shows.  I’ll be there most of the weekend meeting some good friends, checking out the deer mounts and seeing the sights.  Once again another year without a deer head to be scored but maybe I’ll find that one thing that will let me connect with one this coming season.
One of the oldest outdoors shows in the country, the Dixie Deer Classic is a three-day revival for hunters and outdoors enthusiasts. Over the course of the show, some 20,000 patrons will come to buy anything from turkey calls to guided hunts out west. Hundreds of thousands of dollars will change hands.
This years speaker line up is Craig Boddington   http://www.craigboddington.com/     Stan Potts http://www.huntthemidwest.com/stan.html    a   Jay Gregory,  http://www.thewildoutdoors.com/   I’ve never heard any of these guys present so it should be interesting to hear them.  Besides the speakers I look forward to the newest gadgets that “every hunter” needs to be successful.  Last year it was the automatic aerosol can that sprays doe in heat every few minutes to draw that big boy in.
    Now the world of hunting is trying to reach out to women and to bring them into the sport.  In the interview for the N&O the spokesman for the Wake County Wildlife Club that sponsors this show said this;
Hudson stressed that the show caters to families and that women will find products — outdoors and conventional — especially for them.
    “Male of female, if there’s anything you think you need for the outdoors, you can probably find it …,” Hudson said. “In years past, we’ve had clothing manufacturers who specialized in women’s hunting clothes. Plus there’s jewelry and cooking equipment.”
Cooking Equipment!!!  That’s being sensitive and avoiding typical stereotyping of women.  I can see it now “Hey Honey lets go to the hunting show so I can get a new treestand and also pick you up a new fry pan”  Maybe I’ll be daring and ask some of the woman at the show if they have found any good buys on cookware lets just hope the Lodge company ain’t there.
