Cookware not high on agenda of women at Dixie Deer Classic Originally posted 3/06

A real nice deer display

I just got back from the Dixie Deer  Classic and overall it seems to be an ok show.  The test will come tomorrow when the real crowd hits but the added space should enable a better flow of folks getting around.  Well the big question I always get is “did you buy anything?”  Or is “there any deals?”  I didn’t buy much, did renew my NRA membership, and  I picked up some raffle tickets at the NC State Wildlife Club booth.  http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/student_orgs/leopold/wildlife.html  As far as deals go there was nothing I saw that just stuck me as a super buy that I just had to have.

There is plenty of vendors out there and I’m sure if you need something you can find it.  I stopped by and talked with my friends at Mace Sports http://www.macesports.com/, NC Sportsmen Magazine http://www.northcarolinasportsman.com/ and Conman’s guide service  http://www.homestead.com/conmans/
Additionally I showed yesterdays N&O article about the Dixie Deer Classic to 5 women out there and Mr. Hudson’s quote was not well received.
Hudson stressed that the show caters to families and that women will find products — outdoors and conventional — especially for them.
“Male of female, if there’s anything you think you need for the outdoors, you can probably find it …,” Hudson said. “In years past, we’ve had clothing manufacturers who specialized in women’s hunting clothes. Plus there’s jewelry and cooking equipment.”
Many of the comments I would not post here but overall it seemed that most felt it was an ignorant comment to make.    One of them did say that it seemed to be a throw back to attitudes from 20+ years ago that they had hoped had been overcome.  Even some of the guys I showed the article to thought it was a dumb statement for him to make.  As far as cookware goes there is not much out there, you will be better off hitting Target or Walmart.  Who knows maybe tomorrow I’ll run into Mr. Hudson and see if he has any second thoughts or maybe he was misquoted by the N&O.  There seems to be more and more women getting into hunting and I think that’s great for the sport.  As one of the ladies told me that is why there is roads and McDonalds on them so no one has to cook.  Sounds like a good plan to me and I’m not going to argue with them even though Lodge doesn’t have a display out there.
