Product Review Moose & the “ALL-TERRAIN SEAT” “Bull” model Originally posted 4/06

May 27, 2006

Well one of the things I wanted to do with the blog was to share products that I’ve used and the results I’ve had with them.  My newest purchase, the All-Terrain Seat Bull model arrived at my door from Cabela’s just this past Wednesday and the opening of turkey season was going to be my initial test.  I think it’s no secret that I’m a pretty big guy and many of those folding dove stools are no match for the wear and tear I’ll put on them while hunting.  The All Terrain Seat is tested up to 500lbs by their own advertising and the photos show a very sturdy looking folding stool.
When I opened the box and took the stool out I was impressed with the compactness and the rather lightness to the product.  It weighs about 5 lbs that should make it a breeze to carry to the blind.  I liked the design of the legs going through the seat and locking in place when not in use this makes a very  flat compact product.  After reviewing the instructions I attached the legs and rater gingerly sat down on the product expecting to feel the normal give and flex I’m use to with the dove stools I was pleasantly surprised when it felt extremely sturdy with absolutely no give.
The legs are a bit noisy on assembly but after a few minutes of practicing I was confident I could assembly the seat quietly in the dark right under the boss gobblers tree and he wouldn’t know.  I packed my stuff for the trip to the mountains for the opening of turkey season, a test under hunting conditions I was pretty confident and left my other seats at home.
Saturday morning a good hour before shooting light we set up the blind and the rest of our equipment and I sit there on the “Bull” waiting for the sun to come up.  The hunt this morning was good I had a first time turkey hunter in my blind hoping to get her first turkey.  The whole story of that hunt is spectacular and I’ll tell that one at some point.  Needless to say we didn’t kill any turkeys but we had fun.  The “Bull” has some great features, adjustable legs which I didn’t need on this hunt, a swivel top that lets you turn rather effortlessly and quietly.  I turned on that seat 90’ with turkeys within 25ft of the blind and they never heard me.  They make a cushion top which I didn’t have but will say after a few hours  of sitting I decided for my next hunt I would need to bring a seat cushion with me.
Morning hunt over I traded places with one of my friends and he hunted the blind and I sat in a brush pile out in the field using my more traditional low turkey seat.  My buddy used my “Bull” seat in the blind and other then the need for a cushion he found it rather comfortable too.
Late in the afternoon I returned to the blind and sat down on the “Bull” without warning one of the legs gave way and the stool collapsed dumping me on to the ground.  Luckily no one was seriously hurt especially when one falls with a loaded gun in their hands.  I twisted my back and will have to see my chiropractor to get that taken care of but considering what all could of happened I’m happy we were alright.
On inspection of the leg that gave way it snapped up where the leg and the stool join together, pieces of material were clearly missing out of both.  I’m not sure what caused this to give way and none of the other legs show signs of stress.

I must admit that I’m very surprised this happened because this looks like a very quality made product.  Being that it’s the first time I used the product I plan to contact Cabela’s customer service on Monday about this and see if they’ll send me a replacement.  I also plan to contact the manufacture RYWAR enterprises and let them know what happened.  I really believe it was a fluke because Mr. Murphy seemed to be hunting with us all day yesterday.  I’ll keep my readers updated and will reserve judgment on this product until I have the opportunity to test it some more in the field.

I have a one of the Bull seats myself, and have never had a problem with it. A buddy of mine has one also that the foot came off from suction in the mud. He called them up and had a new one in about a week.

I noticed that this is the third time you’ve posted this in the last year or so without an update. Have you tried contacting the company? They seem to stand behind thier product 100% and it was less than a five minute phone call for my buddies replacement to get order. They even sent him a return label for the broken one.

Hey Ryan thanks for stopping by and yes I do plan to run an update on this product. First off I want to clear up some confusing and that is that this story has only been posted twice. My blog was on another network and when I switched over there was no way for me to move the posts from the old to the new except by copying and pasting them. Now when ever someone posts a comment it does refresh it.
My intention is to use this product a number of times before I re-review it. With the type of hunting I do I use this product mostly while turkey hunting and the season ended last year before I could use my new seat. I have used it a couple of times deer hunting from a blind this past season but not enough times in my opinion to review it again. I hope to use it some the next few weeks going after some predators and doing some pre season turkey scouting.
Your friend’s experience with the company mirrors mine they could not be more helpful in correcting the problem. They seem like a great company to deal with and I’m glad you’ve had good luck with your seat. So far my new seat has performed flawlessly and hopefully by April I’ll have enough opportunities to use mine that I can write another review.
