A Couple of Hunters Responses in Today’s N&O

    Jul 03, 2006 @ 01:27 pm by Moose

Last week in the  Black Bear Blog as well as here in Moose Droppings there was postings about an editorial in the N&O from Bob Reder of the Humane Society about his opposition to the study to allow  Sunday Hunting.  Today’s N&O published some response letters from hunters to Mr Reder’s editorial.  Mr. Reder asserted that if the Sunday Hunting ban was lifted that many families would be held hostage in their homes because it would be unsafe to go outside.  Kirk Port of Raleigh in his response correctly points out some of the major flaws in Mr. Reder’s argument.  Mr. Reder cited cases from outside of NC, the fatality in Maine was 20 years ago, and I know Maine did not and still does not allow Sunday Hunting.

I’ll be honest I’m not much of a supporter of the Sunday Hunting, for two reasons.  The first is that I have my doubts that there is enough support among non-hunters to get the law changed and why risk giving the antis a victory.  My second reason is that I’ve just recently gotten into waterfowl hunting and by adding Sundays it will alter the waterfowl season to comply with the Federal regulations.  This could potentially shorten the overall season and some of the migratory birds may not even be here before the season closes.

Hunting is a very safe sport and it is on all of us to keep it that way.  Follow proper safety rules, encourage and educate others to do the same.  The other message that we as hunters fail to get out is that North Carolina Game Lands are a safe place to hunt.  I hate it when I hear hunters talk about how unsafe it is to hunt on Game Lands when the statistics released from North Carolina Wildlife clearly show the vast majority of accidents happen on Private Land and not Public Land.  I bet there are many street corners in Raleigh and Durham that you stand a greater risk of getting shot then any Game Land in the state.
