Primitive Weapons

End of a hard trail Opening day of Muzzleloader Season 2004

I enjoy using primitive weapons especially muzzleloaders. Two weeks ago I took a Black Bear in Maine with my muzzleloader ( I’m working on getting that story ready to post hopefully this week) and I’ve taken a number of deer throughout the past few years. I have also missed some because of moisture problems with the powder and it not igniting.

I’ve not taken any big game animals with my bow as of yet but that is one thing I really need to get serious about.

The Fayetteville Paper had a story about primitive weapons and the popularity of them with the hunting public in North Carolina

Before hunting hounds are loosed on the fields and woodlands, before the majority of the nearly 500,000 hunting-license holders in North Carolina pick up their rifles, hunters are allowed to get the first shots of the season at whitetails using primitive weapons.

Bow season started this past Saturday in the eastern, central and northwestern regions of the state and the muzzleloader season is on its heels, beginning Oct. 7 in the eastern region and Nov. 4 in the central region.

Check out the rest of the article here its an interesting read.

Muzzleloader Season will be here before I know it.  Here is the story of the last deer I took with a muzzleloader on the opening day of 2004. That was a heck of a hunt and required me to rely on my tracking skills to find the buck. I missed last years hunt because I was in Maine Moose Hunting with my trusty rifle. If you’ve never tried black powder hunting season you ought to give it some thought I love it because like the article says the woods are a bit quieter and less crowded.
