Check Those Straps
October 1, 2006
With the Archery season not even a month old and at least one fall from a tree stand has cost a young man his life. Michael Lynn Misenheimer Jr. of Gold Hill North Carolina died from injuries he sustained from an early morning fall on Saturday 23rd of September.
Anthony Sharum, a sergeant with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, said Misenheimer was climbing onto a lock-on type tree stand Saturday when the strap holding the stand to the tree broke.
He had no safety harness and fell about 22 feet to the ground.
He broke several bones, including his back, but was able to call for help on his cellphone.
Investigators found that the strap holding the stand to the tree had become weathered and had not been taken off the tree in the past two years.

Please make sure you check your stands over carefully before you climb in them to hunt. Straps and chains can become worn and stressed. I bought some replacement straps today to use with my stands. The other thing to remember is to wear your safety belts. I know they can be a pain but they could save your life or prevent serious injury. There have been a lot of advances in safety harnesses and belts that makes them more comfortable, easier to use, and a lot safer then they had been. I’m preaching to myself as much as I’m speaking to you. Don’t be a statistic!
