A Bird in the Hand is Worth a Lion in the Brush?

I was reading the Outdoorsman Pressroom when I came across this story.
North Dakota Pheasant Hunter surprised when mountain lion swats his dog in the brush. Hunter kills the mountain lion with birdshot.
Kent Ferguson and his pair of yellow labradors were hot on the trail of some rooster pheasants Wednesday evening. However, rather than have a rooster cackle skyward, the hunt turned into a close encounter with a snarling mountain lion.
“We saw some pheasants run into the cattails so we started working them,” recalled Ferguson. “My 1 1/2- year-old yellow lab went into the cattails and I heard a growl and a yelp. She came flying back with blood on her nose. About that time I saw the cat walking through the cattails and threw three shots at it right away.”
The cattails were thick, 6 feet tall in places, and the visibility was quite limited. Ferguson knew it was not a good place to encounter a lion. About 20 seconds after shooting at the lion, he heard it growl again and quickly reloaded his shotgun.

Wow! They definitely got more than they bargained for in a pheasant hunt.

[...] Last week I posted a story I saw over at the Outdoor Pressroom about a North Dakota pheasant hunter who had a run in with a mountain lion well it has happened again. Linz was the second bird hunter to shoot a lion this season. Kent Ferguson, of Mohall, shot and killed a female lion that got into a scrap with his bird dog Oct. 18 near Lansford. [...]
