Hunter Fights Off Two Other Hunters Attempting to Lay Claim to His Trophy
November 8, 2006

One of the guys I have shared many a hunting camps with had an unusual hunt this past Monday. Rick was hunting on private land in Caswell County on the second day of the muzzleloader season for deer. He had a nice 8 pointer come off the neighboring game lands shortly after sunrise. He shot it making a good hit and the buck spun and returned the way he came. Rick had a job tracking it up because he got no expansion from 225 grain Aerotip Powerbelt and not much of a blood trail. The buck had not gone far but it did make it to the bottom of the hill. Rick began dragging it but it was a bit of a job so he went back to the camp to get a deer cart.
He also recruited some help from a fellow hunter and they headed back to the Game Lands to get the buck. Imagine their surprise when they discovered two other hunters laying claim to Rick’s Buck.
Neither Rick nor his friend were armed so they began yelling and throwing rocks to scare the two coyotes off the buck. They were successful on scaring the yotes off but it goes to show that these predators are strongly entrenched in North Carolina. Hunters will need to rethink or at least consider the options before delaying tracking to give the deer a chance to bed down and die.
Looks like a coyote hunt will be in the near future
