    Big Bears Taken

    Nov 15, 2006 @ 06:33 pm by Moose

Bear season came in this past Monday and the hunters at Conman’s on Lake Phelps wasted little time on dropping the hammer on some nice bruins. The costal areas of North Carolina hold some real trophies and these two that tip the scales over 600 lbs are not as rare as they are in other parts of the country. These bears have a much longer growing season then their northern cousins because they don’t hibernate a third of the year.

I was down at Conman’s deer hunting last week and I knew from conversations with Mike and others that the potential for a good start to the season was in the making. The unknown factor was the warm up late in the week when temperatures in the mid 80’s on Saturday. The front came thru and though it’s still warm by November standards it’s closer to seasonable rather then record highs.

The hunt at Conman’s is not with dogs or with bait (baiting is illegal in NC) but stand hunting. Many of the stands are on trails leading to and from agricultural fields where the bears are feeding. I’m sure if you want a crack at a good NC Bruin you should give Mike a call but don’t be surprised to find spaces are limited or he is fully booked cause of the quality of the hunt.

    1. [...] Two years ago a couple of 600 plus bears were taken just a day apart at Conman’s so he certainly has the habitat to grow’em big. [...]
