Oregon Search Continues
I’m sure like many of you I’ve been following the search for Jim Kim the missing father from the family that was rescued yesterday. The family being found and in good condition is great news and they clearly took appropriate steps to help themselves. Unfortunately the preliminary reports suggest that the family did not have adequate supplies and clothing for traveling in a remote area during a winter storm.
As outdoorsmen we think about situations like this and our ability to face such hardship if it came our way. I try to keep emergency supplies in my truck incase I get stranded somewhere especially during hunting season or when traveling in bad weather.
After 7 or more days with no sign of possible rescue I think many of us would have made a similar decision to try to hike out. The finding of Mr. Kim’s pants is not a good sign; hopefully he had a spare pair and just dropped them. There is a good chance that Mr. Kim is suffering from hypothermia a common enemy to many of us who go outdoors in all types of weather. As a former rescue worker I know that a hypothermia victim can become confused and do bizarre things like removing their clothing.
Prayers for Mr. Kim and his family as well as all the rescuers who out searching for him.
