North Carolina Wildlife is investigating the killing of a juvenile bald eagle that was sitting on a power line on Sowers Rd in Davidson County. Wildlife officers were alerted by a local citizen who called in a report of finding a dead hawk this past Sunday. Once the bird was examined by officials it was determined to be a banded immature eagle one that had been previously injured or one that had been raised in captivity and released. Officials hope to learn more about the bird once the information from the band can be retrieved.
The killing is believed to have taken place on the 27th of December 2006. A federal reward is being offered for information leading to the capture the low life who is responsible for this crime.

Investigators can’t say for certain at this point, but they believe a shotgun was used in the killing.

Witnesses told authorities a light-colored gray or white pickup truck was seen in the area around the time of the shooting.

The killing of a bald eagle is both a state and a federal crime and is punishable by fines in excess of $15,000 and possible imprisonment.

The Bald Eagle has made an incredible come back in the state of North Carolina. 25 years ago there wasn’t a single pair of nesting eagles in the state but by 2000 there was 34 nests in the state. Despite it’s remarkable come back it is still a rare and awesome sight to see one soaring across the Carolina blue sky.

Why anyone would commit this crime is beyond me. Anyone with information is urged to call 859-1891 or (800) 662-7137.
