It is Murder In Wisconsin Woods
January 8, 2007
A follow up to my earlier post about the death of a Hmong hunter. The autopsy confirms early speculation that this past weekend’s death of a hunter was in fact a murder.
The Marinette County sheriff said that an accidental meeting between two men hunting small game led to one of them being killed this weekend.
Sheriff Jim Kanikula said that an autopsy conducted on Monday confirmed that Cha Vang, 30, of Green Bay, was a victim of a homicide, although he declined to be more specific.
The unanswered question at this point is the motive behind the murder and was it racially motivate as many suspect. One would hope not but time will tell as the case develops.
As a hunter we hope that as we pursue our sport that we would be free from crime and the love of the hunt would overcome any cultural difference. The Hmong community has taken steps to improve their image by offering safety class and education on rules and regulations. One of the concerns was a perceived disrespect for game laws among the Hmong culture that seemed to come to a head with the killings in 2004.
As hunters we are a smaller and smaller group each year it seems so it would be in our best interest to reach out to others across cultural and gender lines.
