    Snowshoeing in North Carolina?

    Jan 17, 2007 @ 11:54 pm by Moose

I was interested when I read the Girls Gone Outdoors Blog this week and it’s about an activity I haven’t done since I moved out of Maine. My snowshoes are still hanging in my mother’s garage waiting for me like an old friend. With temperatures this past weekend in the 70’s and the promise of an icy commute in the morning it’s hard to believe there is any place in this state to go snowshoeing. This has been one crazy winter and with the way it’s going who knows we may see substantial snowfall before spring sets in for real so maybe I should have my snowshoes shipped to me.

    1. Just go to the mountains, plenty of snow in NC. I remember a trip on the AT in the Smokeys from Ice Water Spring to TriCorner knob in January years back that had to be aborted because the snow was too deep. We ended up hiking through the melt zone on a different route — 1 mile of two steps, fall, get up, take another 2 steps.

    2. Hey Sauceman,
Your right about that the Mountains of NC are a regular winter playground that I sometimes don’t think about living in the triangle area. Today’s dusting of snow was just a tease for me. I was spooled in Maine where I could just go out the door and hit the trail with my snowshoes. Hiking in the mountains I suspect is very challenging and certainly many of the places on the AT would not be for the novice like me. Many of my snowshoe hikes in Maine was over open fields or along the river. They also came in handy when chasing snowshoe hares or going ice fishing.
