Running A Fowl of the Law

March 5, 2007

Well if there is any doubt that turkeys are expanding in North Carolina then this story will prove they are. Just this past weekend I was talking to the guys at the Johnston County NWTF Chapter about when were turkeys going to expand into the Wake County Johnston County area because I was ready to see some. I live in Wake County and hunt some just over the line in Johnston and I’ve only seen one turkey ever in this area.

I was headed home from work and decided to stop at the corner store to grab a soda. As I start to get out of my truck I see a lady running down Highway 50 towards me chasing a hen turkey. As I got out she told me she was attempting to get it out of the road before it got hit.

I was able to get some photos of this hen running in and out of traffic yelping a lot but every time she get to the otherside of the road she would shortly cross back. At one point I saw her duck in behind the phone booth when a trooper came through the intersection.

Well her party didn’t last to long before the law finally got up with her when the Garner Police Officer pulled up. A brief chase ensued and the hen crossed the highway and headed back towards the river. Wake County Deputy and the Garner Officer stood by to make sure this turkey stayed out of traffic.

It was entertaining to watch the police chasing a turkey and it’s great to know that the turkeys are moving into our area. There is hope that a turkey season real soon I may be able to sleep in a bit instead of driving hour to chase a gobbler.

I hope you Enjoy the Photos I took
