    Turkey Hunting Code of Ethics

    Apr 03, 2007 @ 11:23 pm by Moose

    The season is coming on fast and its good for us to all spend some time to think about safety and ethics before we go afield. In addition I hope you plan to take a youth out hunting this year to share the wonders of the great outdoors. In case you missed it check out my Challenge I posted this weekend over at the Black Bear Blog. ( I’ll be more then happy to post a photo or a story from any of my readers about hunts they take to fulfill this challenge. ) Covering safety and ethics with any young person you take on a hunt is important.
    The National Wild Turkey Federation has lots of great information and tips for all experience levels. Here is the Turkey Hunters Code of Conduct.

    A Turkey Hunter’s Code of Conduct
    As a responsible turkey hunter, I will
    • not let peer pressure or the excitement of the hunt cloud my judgment;
    • learn and practice safe hunting techniques;
    • hunt the wild turkey fairly;
    • know the capabilities and limitations of my gun or bow and use it safely;
    • obey and support all wildlife laws and report all violations
    • respect the land and the landowner and always obtain permission before hunting;
    • avoid knowingly interfering with another hunter and respect the right of others to lawfully share the out-of-doors;
    • value the hunting experience and appreciate the beauty of the wild turkey;
    • positively identify my target as a legal bird and insist on a good shot; and share responsible turkey hunting with others and work for wild turkey conservation.

    1. Thanks for posting this valuable set of guidelines. We all need the occasional reminder, and with a few minor wording changes you could apply this code to just about anything in life.
